WHERE DO ALL THESE WIRES GO & What do they do?!!!? CONFUSING!! AHHH!

I just wanted to know the BASIC wiring to get my car to run. I've read everything on how to rebuild an SBC as well as tranny but I just have NO clue what all these wires are. What is the LEAST I will have to do just so it will run and start everyday? I'm in Indiana so emissions stuff doesn't matter. Could anyone just please feel me in. I've bought books and read up on everything but I've still and TOTALLY confused when it comes to wiring everything up.

My friend has a 1974 camaro with a new 355 he had his boss put it for him. I looked under the hood and he barely has any wires or anything. That's how I want mine to be. His is so simple to work on and very reliable too. His also has no AC.

you need:
-your negative battery cable grounded to the motor.
-your positive battery cable ran to the starter with wires ran to the alternator for charging.
-distributor wire

this is the bare minimum to get the car running with no sensors gauges or anything.
hope i didnt miss something

If you have a non-computerized carb and distributor:

See that huge bundle that comes from under the right fender, near the blower motor? That's the computer's wiring. It's what you don't need any more. Start at that big bundle, and work your way out to the end of every one of its branches. I would recommend carefully disconnecting all of them, and folding it all back up in the inner fender well. Things that only connect to that bundle, like most all the stuff behind the brake booster, can also be removed; and sensors that it goes to, like the ones in the water outlet for example, you could remove and/or replace with pipe plugs for further cleanup.

Any wire that goes to the bundle that comes from the left, you need; and the few that come through the firewall under the heater core, you need. Those 2 groups will give you lights, engine power, gauges, heat & A/C, etc.

If you still have the computer stuff, then you need it all, the car won't really run right with any of it missing.

Thanks for all the help but someone tell me things like:
1) There is a wire coming from the steering column to the ignition box, then to the starter etc. That's just example. I don't know if it's right or not. THanks. I can't take auto shop in school so this is where (and books) I get all my info. Thanks.

OK so I am doing the exact same thing in My car A few things you should know and maybe I'm wrong (if I am I'm sure we'll hear about it) The distributor on the 84 is electronicly advanced therefor if you remove or disconnect the other wires or the computer you can still get it to run but it will never run properly what I have done is bought a Vaccuum advace distributor the to go a step futher I put and eldabrock Carb on and removed all the other vaccuum controled things on the car i.e. the map sensor egr and so on so I now have only three vaccuum lines distributor a/c and brake booster. this way when it is hooked up and you are tuning it you aren't chasing electrical problems when you really have a vaccuum leak. that being said the other post were absolutly right every wire coming in through the right fender you can get rid of. and just to be a little more confusing and I'm not too sure someone else will have to fill in here you should know that If I not mistaken if you remove the computer and the wires to the tranny the lockup will no longer function.
