Weird Problem Need Help ASAP

I have a 86 Camaro with a 350 swap. It has a weiand intake and a Edelbroke 650 carb. I just did a tune up, Plugs, wires and did my valve cover gaskets. It ran fine before, but now that i changed things it runs weird. It fires up and runs, it idles a little rough. It drives but while on consistent throttle you can feel it kinda jerk a little. I checked the firing order and its fine, im lost.

Any Help

Recheck the spark plug wires. It's very easy to get side-by-side cylinders crossed.

That was the first thing i checked, its all good. Plus i did one at a time so it would have been hard to screw it up.

Re: Weird Problem Need Help ASAP

Ok just to make sure its all ok i use NGK V-Power UR4 Spark Plug, and Autolite Ignition Wire Set, The only other thing i changed was the valve cover gaskets. Nothing else was messed with. And it ran like its miss firing. I messed with the timing thinking that might be the issue but it didn't help or hurt it. Im sitting at 10 degrees right now.

I think it might be my carburetor, i dont think my electronic choke is working. When its cold and i start it, it will die right away so i have to do it a couple times.

And just to humor myself, since im not an expert can someone show me a Diagram of the engine and distributor and the order the plugs are supposed to be going in!

I gapped my plugs at .35, but the old ones where at .45, could that make a difference

Not that much.

Did you drop any of the new spark plugs while you were installing them?

You may need to check your new spark plug wires. Wouldn't be the first time new parts were bad.

Did you replace the cap & rotor?

Ok im getting mixed opinions on the gap, Some say that the .010 is a big enough difference to make it do that. One plug dropped onto the frame i think, i checked it out before putting it in, it looked fine.

Another ?. Say all the wires going to the distributor were exactly one right or left from where they should be. Would the car fire, and or run like that. Im just trying to figure that out. Cause i was looking at my set up and according to what i saw mine are in the position for non HEI, but i DO have HEI and that diagram shows everything one spot to the let.

It wouldn't run with all of them one off. Where they are on the cap (for instance, which terminal the #1 is on) isn't important. It's only important that the rotor is pointing to the terminal with the wire going to the cylinder that is supposed to be firing at that time.

A dropped plug can look fine and still misfire.

You can try regapping them at .045" and see if it makes a difference.

Alright, aside from the plug that was dropped, what do you think?

This may seem a bit off the wall but... did you happen to lose one of the spark plug seals from the plug? You know the washer that they come with. you could have a leak through the threads on the spark plug. You could also have craked a plug during the install, its not that hard to do when trying to get to those hard to reach plugs. just for kicks, try putting an old plug in one at a time to see if thats the problem. You can do the same with the wires.

Re: Weird Problem Need Help ASAP

I had a similar problem, when I dropped my plug it altered the gap. I had to pull each wire while it was running and verify which cylinder wasnt firing, that is how I found the faulty plug.
