1991 z28 TPI 350 swap

This is my first swap, I decided to swap out my seized 305 TPI ,and go with a 350 out of a blazer. I started out by dissconnecting all sensors, cooling lines, hoses, headers, A.I.R lines, (remember when doing this swap for the first time dont forget the a.i.r tube connected to the back of your head on the right side, passenger, as i found out the hard way, and destroyed the tube, and had a hell of a time removing the nut that holds the tube, and ground wires to the head). Next I removed all tranny bell housing to engine bolts, (at this point the car is lifted on 2 jack stands at the front), while under the car I also removed the starter, ( forgot to mention before I removed the tranny bolts I removed upper and lower intakes, along with all injecters, and fuel rail.)I then put my attention to the engine mounts, I used a 5/8 wrench, and 11/16 socket, and began to remove the nut and bolt, with a little struggle, a lot of profanity, the bolts came on out. Now for the fun, frustrating part, and with the help of a friend I began chaining up the engine; with the engine chained, a jack on the tranny, and my friend controlling the jack, I began lifting the engine up with a cherry picker (engine hoist) while lifting the engine trying to get over the mounts, my friend started jacking the tranny slowly, and at every angle possible at this point trying to wiggle the engine out, and of course no luck, then I went under the engine and removed more bolts, the bolts from tranny to bell housing (4 bolts), made removing the engine much easier, with the bell housing loose the engine lifted straight out. Now with the engine out I started stripping the engine ,getting the parts ready to swap on to the 350, do to extensive research I found everything I need will swap over to the 350 from my 305 ( headers, starter, clutch, upper, lower intake, and all the front accessories) the 350 will bolt up fine to my stock T5 tranny, not sure for how long but it will work, and thats the way im heading. At this point im just waiting on my 350 to arrive, once I get it I will begin to install, and I will post as I progress through this swap.

Re: 1991 z28 TPI 350 swap

hey if you are re using the sensors and the wiring harness do your self a favor and learn from my mistake. Label with tape what the sensor is and put them all in a little box or holder. Then label all the tpi harness with with tape with what fitting goes to what sensor. Or just label it and leave all the sensors attached to the harness. You may know a lot more than I do so this may not be valuable advice but it will save time in the long run if you are not good enough to site identify and know where it goes on the motor without looking it up.

Re: 1991 z28 TPI 350 swap

well I finally found A suitable engine for my swap, I bought an old ugly 1987 suburban, with a 350. I have the engine ripped out of the suburban , and started swappin parts from my 305 to the 350, I pulled the heads, roller cam and lifters, cause the 350 came with the swirl heads, flat tappet cam and lifters. I started installing the heads, cam, lifters. Thats where im at right now....Im still waiting on parts ;( 22lbs injectors, ecm, )

Re: 1991 z28 TPI 350 swap

good progress on your swap. I finally just got my 355 running right (that was swapped in place for the boat-anchor 305). I did similar to what you did, but you are a brave man for leaving your radiator in there, one small "bump" and you could have easily punctured a hole. I left the nose on though... Good luck on the swap back in!

Re: 1991 z28 TPI 350 swap

i have the engine together now, and installed in the car, tranny hooked up, (had a very hard time getting the tranny bolted up to engine due to new pilot bearing), I installed the headers before I put the engine in, would have been way easier if I had left them off, but I managed to get it in. I finished installing the lower intake, upper plenum, front pulleys, all the wiring is together, headers hooked up, im only missing the distributor, and pulley belt, before i can fire it up, with the ecm I just used the prom out of a 1991 corvette, trial and error process, will post more once engine fires up..

Re: 1991 z28 TPI 350 swap

i tried to fire the engine, it cranked but did not run.....after a day or so, i tried a different coil, ignition mudule, tested fuel, all wires, and found a faulty distributor, replaced distributor, and it fired right up..timed the engine to 6 deg before tdc. replaced fuel pump...hooked scanner up and monitered ,engine is running lean due to stock pcm....i have an idea to buy a new adjustable fuel regulator.....does anyone have any ideas if this will correct my problem....the car runs smooth right now...but I dont want it to run lean...any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What chip are you using? You had mentioned you would start by trying a 91 Corvette chip, maybe that's your problem? Did you get the 22 lbs injectors in?

Re: 1991 z28 TPI 350 swap

yes i tried the corvette chip...but the car ran very bad...rough, I then put the stock 305 ecm in, with the stock chip, car runs smooth, but still lean....still running 19 lb injectors, I have read that they can handle up to 300 plus hp. I am planning on getting an adjustable fuel reg, and boost fuel pressure to around 50 psi, I hope this will solve my problem...any feed back to anyone who has tried this route would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1991 z28 TPI 350 swap

From what I see you have two problems here. You're running lean because of the 305 chip not the ECM, they're the same. The other problem is your 19 lbs injectors, they don't deliver as much volume as the 22 lbs, that's why ones are for the 305 and the others for the 350. You need to use the chip and injectors for the 350 for it to run properly.

Re: 1991 z28 TPI 350 swap

well I have finally recieved my adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and installed in my new 350, adjusted the fuel pressure to 48psi, and it seems to have solved my lean condition, the next step is to install a 350 tpi fuel pump, I have the pump but it hasent been installed yet, but the car is running great at this point. Im just dreadding the install of the fuel pump....it is almost street ready since the snow is all gone, so once this pump goes in, it will be time to burn up those worn out tires....

Re: 1991 z28 TPI 350 swap

Nice work on the swap. I did the same with my old 85 IROC. Swapped a rebuilt jasper 350 underneath my blown 305 TPI. I did the same thing to make it run good, bump the fuel pressure up. It ran mid 14's in the 1/4 until I totalled it.
