1988 Trans am 305 Lo3 TBI to 350 Lo5 TBI

So after searching and failing many times for the past few months,we finally came across a nice 5.7 liter out of a Roadmaster. Guy had it at a shop. Said the cars body was crap and the engine ran WAY too good to junk with the car. So i hauled A s s out there today to check it out. Sure enough,it was the right one. 92 Roadmaster 5.7 with 112,000 miles. Its the type A model which i heard is the less duty model. It pushes out about 190-220 HP i believe? And has about 300 torque. Ive got some headers im throwing on there with a 3 inch Y pipe which goes into a 2 inch flange, sadly. Also throwing on a new open element air breather and some extra goodies. The motor needs a REAL good cleaning but from what the guy said,it was a beastly running engine. Its the complete motor from the pan to the intake. Only needs an alternator. Ive got some chrome valve covers im slipping on there. Also considering throwing in a bigger cam while im at it? Still debating. Weve just been through hell with this car. So were pretty much at the end of our rope here. We just wanna get the thing plated! haha.

My 305 was a great motor and all but the car sat for 10 years so that lead to shot rings, stems, cylinderwalls, and valve springs. So why replace all of that on a 305 when you could get a 350? Were not going to completely rebuild the 350. Just simple stuff like an upgraded water pump, some headers, intake, stems, EGR valve, distributor, and the newer pullys that were on my 305. Were also having a custom chip made for her
Lets get started

Ill most some pics of the old motor in the car and progressing from there on out
yes extraordinarily clean on top because of my constant upkeep. Too bad you cant see the internal problems

Really wish i wouldve taken pictures of all the problems in that 305. Essentially like i mentioned above,it needed new rings, pistons, stems, needed to be board out, honed, needed the heads to be redone, all new gaskets, Etc. Surprisingly when some retard lets a car sit from 2000- 2010,it has mechanical issues! go figure!

Yesterday we got the monster engine home. Had no idea what condition itd be in, Just went by the guys words on the phone. We had to drive to the ghetto to get it and BOY was i scared. We got to this shop that was in the middle of no where surrounded by people who mainly only spoke spanish and One english speaking guy. After checking the motor and the condition i was amazed. Its dirty as sin but thats a given. A lot of new parts and the lady who had it really kept up on it. So we loaded it into the back of the 4x4 and drove off. Later thinking, maybe it was a chop shop? Haha. They had a ton of vehicles there that were plated and they were just stripping them all. Weird... ANywho. Heres some bad pics of the motor. Sorry only had my phone for photos

Ahhh yes,and so it begins=]

Today things began. We got the motor out of the truck bed and go it on our homemade engine lift. And then sat it on the engine stand where we could inspect things So far the only bad thing weve found is that the driver side of the block had a coolant leak so its rusted. But i sanded that down today back to metal. And the engine mounts seem to be bigger and straighter than the old. No big deal at all, this is going great.

this picture is after taking some parts off
=]

The overspray doesnt matter.Smoothing the block and painting it black tomorrow morning. Then putting on the headers. heres one of them cooking in the grill =p

I have a chain hooked to the pully system that is rated for lifting 1300 pounds. It is wrapped around 3 4x6's that are laying horizontally across the beams in the attic. The chain on the engine is a lifting chain that came from autozone thats rated about about 1000 pounds. The clips were rated to support 1300 as well. Weve lifted 3 engines with it no problem

Re: 1988 Trans am 305 Lo3 TBI to 350 Lo5 TBI

A little update on whats gone on so far today
Took everything off of the intake and the passenger side pullys are now off. Only thing were confused about now are 2 sensors that are on the new block but not the old 305? We'll figure it out
So far the only thing we have to replace before putting it back in is the flywheel. The 153 tooth wheel needs to be put on

Hopefully across several beams in the attic...

Just checking, we've seen some pretty shaky things here.

Got pics of the sensors?
