Help me pick out parts!!!!

Anybody wanna help me pick out parts for my new build? Here's whats up: I have a mild 355 in my camaro right now, but I have reason to believe it's basically shot. I want to build a new short block. I have 64cc trickflow aluminum heads, comp ultra magnum roller rockers, comp magnum pushrods +.100 in length, and an edelbrock air gap intake. I have my choice of a 350 or 400, both have not been bored.

My goal is 450hp at the crank. I do not plan on doing any power adders. Should I buy a rotating assembly, or reuse my crank/rods? I don't know too much about building an engine, but want to learn. I assume I have to pick out pistons, cam, lifters, oil pump, etc. I will also need a carb to match. Any help is very much appreciated.

Re: Help me pick out parts!!!!

Starting with the 400 would make the 450 FWHP goal easier to obtain, but possibly have more risk with respect to block strength.

If you decide to go with the 350, make it easy on yourself and get a 383 rotating assembly.

Which Air Gap intake do you have?

Agree with five, stoke it.

What CC are your heads?

This is what i used to obtain 500 to the crank. Though its not proven on paper as am still working kinks out and breaking the motor in, but am positive its 500+. Should give you a general idea of what you have to work with.

- 96' sbc 350 .030 over, decked, honed, poly motor mounts
-Eagle 383 forged bottom end, Cast crank, flat top +5cc 11:1 compression
-Complete ARP engine bolts from pan to intake
-Edelbrock RPM Air Gap Intake
-AFR #1040, upgraded springs
-Comp Cam ultra pro magnum rocker arms 1.52
-Mike jones custom grind cam 234/236dur .579 lift
-Manley double roller timing chain
-MSD Distributor Kit
-Melling oil pump
-Mallory fuel pressure regulator
-1 inch carb spacer
-Quick Fuel 750, mechanical secondaries Q series
-6.325" ATI super damper harmonic balancer
-Dyno Dons headers, electric cutout, full 3inch exhaust

Re: Help me pick out parts!!!!

If you don't mind me asking, how much did the machine work cost?

My intake is an rpm air gap.

So I should buy a whole new rotating assembly? Forged?

Re: Help me pick out parts!!!!

Whats the intake runner size? 180cc 195cc 200cc 210cc?

Not sure what my machine work cost. had it done through a friend. He decked, bored, honed, hot tanked, clearance for crank, and assembled the bottom end for around $800. From what i seen on the boards, clearance for a stroker usually runs $150-250.

So I should buy a whole new rotating assembly? Forged?
Were not saying this, were giving you options In your post you said you wanted a new short block. I think that would include new crank, rods, and pistons. You dont plan on running power adders, so am sure you will be fine non forged. hypereutectic pistons would probably work just fine. I went forge because am planning on spraying down the road.

Re: Help me pick out parts!!!!

I believe they are 180cc. I don't know much about this, thus the reason I am asking. I want to learn. It looks like I am looking at $800 or so for the parts and a grand or so for machining. I am pretty happy with that.

Re: Help me pick out parts!!!!

Save yourself sum headache and buy the whole rotating assembly at once. They can be a pain to try to put a set together piece by piece. One slight overlook on a measurement can add cost and delay your build. If I was gonna do a stroker kit I'd prolly go with Scat. I had a Eagle forged stroker and it failed. With Eagle and Scat just so you know the metal is from China but they are forged and machined in the US. I had 450 stroker in my 85 and it sure enuff demanded repect runnin low 12's in the 1/4. Now that the stroker is trash, I'm installin a 463 big block to see if I can really turn sum heads now.. Good luck on your build bud
