What do you think of this cam?

Hello all. This is my first post although I have been a reader for a while and already feel like I know some of the guys on the board.

I am looking for some input with the cam I've chosen for my current 355 build. My engine builder is a professional racer and has a great reputation up here in the northeast where I'm from. So far he has prepped my shortblock and cleaned up a set of heads I brought to him. Today I dropped off most of the remaining parts he'll need to finish the assembly of my long block and he was excited to see the new StealthRam with 30lb injectors i have up close. He was however a little concerned with my cam choice and was afraid I might not like the street drivabilty it would offer. I explained that this was not going to be a daily driver and I wanted to win at the drag strip so going a bit radical was exactly what I thought I wanted. My cam calls for a 3200 stall converter and I have read many posts here from people who are happy with that.

If someone experienced with a motor setup similar to what have could chime in and tell me what they think about my combo and how it would drive on the street and also at the strip I would be very greatful. I also planning on having a local tuner/dyno shop help me dial in my ECM once I get it fired up. Will a professional tuner be able to make this work with my computer or am I asking too much? I could return this cam and order a different one if needed before next week.

Thanks

Re: What do you think of this cam?

It will be alittle radical but definately tuneable. I've tuned a 230 deg cam in a 355 and it was smooth enough, something of that lunati size would also be possible.

Only thing I'd change is the converter.... 3200 is gonna be abit lazy. 3800-4000 will be much better with that cam for best 60 foot. Friends car with the 230 cam ran 3600 and it was ok but could be abit better. Its gonna want some rear end gear too.

Re: What do you think of this cam?

very nice selection... would be nice if you had a roller cam
I would like to see more compression for your combo
that Lunati cam lift is based on 1.5 rockers... 1.6 rockers will give you .564
your factory ECM...and tuned prom will have no problems at all
the HSR starts making power @ 10deg and loves 12-16 Deg
as above 3:45 and up

Re: What do you think of this cam?

Thanks Fellas... Now I can go to bed tonight without worrying that I made a big mistake. I was planning on doing both the 1.6 rockers and also the gears. Prolly have to put that on next years list though. Gonna have my hands full when the motor is done.

Concerning the convert though. How does a 4000 stall feel driving around town? Gas mileage is not an issue so no need to worry about that. Do I have to rev the full 4k before I'll even budge and just deal with the front end lifting off the ground pulling into Walmart?

Re: What do you think of this cam?

You will likely only have to rev alittle to get moving. Light throttle figure 2K rpm or so and your moving pretty well. medium throttle you can hit mid 3000 rpm if you wanted and be moving pretty hard. Only on full throttle will you see 4000 rpm stall speed

In a 700r4 its not as bad as it sounds. I daily drive 3200 and had 3600 in my other car at one point and have 4000+ in my turbo car and they drive great.

Who might that be? I seem to be having a hard time finding anybody in the North East that knows TPI. Most "tuners" won't even touch it. I know Don @ Slowhawk won't.

One of the associates who works with my engine builder recommended a shop down in the Plymouth Ma area. I have not followed up on this lead just yet to verify but I will get back to you when I get more info. The associate has a 355 TPI I believe but is using an LS1 ECM if that makes sense. Basically he has done some legwork and said this guy would be able burn me what ever I need. I asked if he had a chassis dyno and would let me look over his shoulder while he was programming so I could learn a thing or too and he said it wouldnt be a problem. I should be picking up my motor next week so it won't be too long. I might be chasing a pipe dream, though I hope not.
