Re: Anybody know where I can buy a 383 already built
The LT1 idea, while not without its flaws, actualyl has a LOT of advantages when you're on a really tight budget. You can throw a hot cam in one, have it tuned properly, and run 13's, 12's if you get it geared/stalled properly. You can get around some of its limitations by carbureting it, but you lose the main advantage the LT1 has - cheap, effective EFI. If you'rej ust gonna carb something, you may as well build a Gen I block, although it will still cost you a lot more money. The LT1 comes with all teh good stuff to begin with. You dont need to change the heads and throw a carb in it. Just a cam and they will scream... until the opti dies. But thats the price you pay for cheap power.

Keep saving your money and you will eventually be able to get what you want.
Also keep an eye on the KSL classifieds. Quite a few engines pass through there and you may be able to get a deal on one.

Classifieds may find a used longblock or atleast a shortblock. I once was forced to sell a complete forged 7k rpm 383 shortblock for 2000$, worth 3000-3500 easily but no buyers

Re: Anybody know where I can buy a 383 already built
I've only ever bought three shortblocks from someone, and both happened to be family friends that has been around for a long time. I've bought enough car parts to know it's not worth gambling with a few thousand dollars because you can easily watch it dissipate into less than a few hundred bucks if you get screwed on the deal.
Not saying you shouldn't buy a used motor, but just keep that in mind when buying stuff.. You really need to know what you're doing when you go that route; otherwise you're really playing a losing game. For every 1 legit person I've dealt with on car related stuff, I've dealt with about 4 other dishonest people trying to make a quick buck off me. It all sounds like a great deal until you realize you just bought someone else's problem for a premium dollar.
Just remember: you've got $2,000 now. Once it's gone, it's gone. Someone blatantly screwing you over has absolutely no intentions of giving you your money back if/when you find out something is terribly wrong.
I'm lucky enough to where this has only happened to me one time.. but let me tell you - EVERYTHING was wrong and it was impossible to find out until I had it in my possession (it was a car at a transmission shop, and a reputable one no less).

Re: Anybody know where I can buy a 383 already built
Here's the advice you don't want to hear.
It would be great to show up your 10th grade Honda buddies with a 12 second Camaro, but you don't have to. Your Camaro as it is with the headers would probably be just as effective. You want to buy a 383 out of a box as a shortcut, but there really is no such thing. It's a common scenario to spend $2000 on an engine and then have an unexpected malfuntion, and the car ends up sitting under a tree for 6 years because you blew your budget and you've since moved on to a new phase in your life. A 31 year old car likely needs more work than just the engine. My advice would be to concenrate on learning all the systems that make the car tick and work on building up the performance later. Besides, there will always be some kid that blows you away because Daddy bought it for him.
I do understand your gumption, I was doing the same thing way back when your Camaro was new. I'm not trying to discourage you, in fact I love to see young guys getting dirty and learning it. I just think your chance of doing it successfully would be higher if you slow down a wee bit.

Kinda the same boat im in with my 383 lt1 now. 383lt1 good callies parts not the compstart line stuff. FTI Th400 and a turboneticcs/tial turbo setup. (see sig ) Cant give it away at $4000 rtr. Im looking to move on to a diff. setup and rather sell it quick for cheap and put that $ twards lsx swap stiff. vs sit on it forever at what its worth for "that right buyer"

Re: Anybody know where I can buy a 383 already built
spend your 2k on something besides the engine. like making the car look nice, replacing worn parts, beefing up the suspension, things like that. even the little stock 305 has plenty of "get up and go" for a 15/16 year old kid.

If your headliner board is still intact, you can recover it.
If you need any help with that, I would be happy to assist. I am in SLC, but I'd be willing to come up to Clearfield to give you some tips on recovering the headliner.

Re: Anybody know where I can buy a 383 already built
when i was 18 last year i had a 383 built for my 86 IROC just the short block costed me 2500 for all the parts and assembly i bought some vortec heads for it and to get them gone threw and put on was part of my bill full forged internals with 10.8 to 1 compression i had about 3400 just into it from carb to oil pan not including all the other little things i had to buy by the end of my build i had alitte over 4k into my engine swap including a new hood scince i went with more of a high rise intake, just be prepared for un expected costs and problems i spent months on this site trying to get everything figured out and still had un ecpected things pop up. my so called budget build for $3000 ended up costing me a grand more than i excpected
