Building a LS7/LSX for my '87 Iroc
Building a LS7/LSX for my '87 Iroc
I just joinned this site, and I've had my '87 Iroc Z28 for a few years now(Will put pics up soon) and I haven't really done much upgrades to it, just mainly maintenance. I've been doing alot of performance work to my RAM HEMI and pretty happy where I'm at power wise with the truck and really want to get my Iroc running the best it possibly can. Summer's coming up and I'll have plenty of extra cash in my pocket and saw that I'd be able to afford to build the engine that I want, It's pretty much a full LS7/LSX build. The main questions I had that I'm almost certain the 700r4 wont be able to handle the amount of power with the engine I'm building, and same with the computer, and was unsure of what type of transmission and computer to use? I have a tuning shop that did my dynotunes for my truck that is really good and I'll have them do the same with my Iroc, I just need to know where I can get the correct computer and what type of transmission would you guys recommend I use? I know it's kind of a stupid question and I've looked around in the forums for these answers but I couldn't find the answer, Thanks!

Welcome, to the boards! Well lets see where to begin....First, if you are going to be swapping in a gen 3 motor, you will need a completely new wiring harness and computer to go along with it. The simple answer on the 700r4 is that it wont work, the problem with this swap is all the supporting parts. Aside from dealing with building a motor you will need to source accesories, notch or replace the kmember, get headers, upgrade fuel pump, trans and rear end and plenty of other issues.... keep looking there is plenty of info on this site about ls swaps...

Yea It's just mainly the supporting parts that I'm having trouble finding what would be best/would work. I've researched and found many different computers/wiring harnesses but unsure as well with transmission. All I have a good idea of what I'm doing is my full engine build, It's just a matter of getting the rest of the parts that go along with it :/

LS1 and LS7 are all part of the Gen III/IV family, so for the most part, yes. The major difference that you'll need to contend with is the differences between the harness and the ECU. The LS1 and LS7 require different controllers because of the 24 tooth vs. 58 tooth reluctor wheel, as well as differences in the harnesses due to different connector styles, different throttle body style, different cam sensor location, etc.

and also, different exhaust port profile. The LS7 port profile does not match those of the other LS heads except the LSA & LS9 head
