Clicking Noise and 85 Won't Start

My Car won't start, I heard it might have been my battery, i took it to get charged. Put it back on and the sane thing happened. Is there anything that I might need to replace instead of the battery; alternator, starter etc? It was driving fine. Got out of the car got back in and in a matter of 5 minutes it wouldn't start again. Wtf???? Help Please and thanks

Batt cables

Start by cleaning - NOT "checking", but DISCONNECTING AND CLEANING - both ends of both cables, with baking soda, hot water, and a toothbrush or (preferably) a brass wire brush.

First thing: make sure that the battery is in good condition and if battery keeps the charge. If the battery is good and the positive cable and negative cable are clean, you have an alternator problem
On many cars the voltage regulator is built inside the alternator

Batt cables cleaned, terminals clean, next I'm checking the stater. O'Reilly has a nice price with a lifetime warranty plus core fee

Not an expert but sounds like the starter, new one in mine made a big difference.

You need to be aware of what you are dealing with

1.the starter itself
2.the above mentioned cables that supply power from the battery
3.the wiring from (inc ) the Ign switch that makes it all work.

If you have done as suggested above ,and cleaned / tightened the battery cables , confirmed your battery is fully charged then you need to check
the starter actually works.
Run a wire from the small (S) terminal on the starter up to the battery.
Out of gear , key off ,touch the wire on the batt Pos terminal.
If the engine cranks , the starter is fine.If not you have a starter problem.

If the engine cranks then you have to start checking the starter circuit from the key to the starter through the starter relay , NSS ,etc ,
even if the Ign switch itself is working and correctly adjusted.
If the switch is out of position you will get RUN , but not START position

If its the starter you might want to wrap the new one in a thermal blanket so your not doing this again in a few months. Or sooner because of "heat sink". The Y pipe likes to cook them.

Re: Clicking Noise and 85 Won't Start

Well it got started, the previous owner changed the sterring column along with the ignition switch. Went to advance auto they have never seen a ignition switch like I have. Mechanic says its off of a newer model chevy. Next is tune up. Any other faulty equipment that I should know about before I get in depth? On my 1977 buick lesabre I did plugs wires distibuter rotor cap air filter. Same things or what? Im going to use seafoam also. And the problem was that something got stuck out of position in the steering column. Simple fix cost me 30 bucks from my local neighborhood crack fiend...

Re: Clicking Noise and 85 Won't Start

it is most likely your voltage regulator... i had the exact same problem with my car.. i got a new battery and a different alternator. it ran for a little and quit it turns out the alternator's voltage regulator is burned out in fact im picking it up in half an hour you gotta open up the alternator to replace it.. again i had the same symptoms as you
