For the 20k you'll spend on an LS9 you could build a supercharged LS1/2/3/6/7 for less money and make more or the same amount of power and probably cover your swap costs. I'd imagine swapping the LS9 in would go basically how the other LS swaps have gone.

It's not just the power, either. Every aspect of the car needs upgraded to survive. Chassis, brakes, tires, axle, transmission.
Add at least another $ 10,000 for all the stuff you haven't already considered.

Of course there is always the wisdom of putting a $20K engine in a $4K car

Re: zr1 engine in third gen
Weight is mostly a question of how many luxuries you insist on. The ZR1 is somewhat weighed down by all this unnecessary junk: airbags, BCM, Sat Nav, a/c, power windows, power locks, power seats, 500 times the wiring, radio, speakers, IRS, magnetorheological shocks, ABS, ASR, carpet, other sound deadening materials, et cetera.
Besides, any LQ4 with an 88 mm turbo can make more power than a ZR1 comes with. At FAR less cost. The extra weight of the iron block is offset by the potential to survive more power, and you can make up the difference with a fiberglass hood from an '82-'84 Z28. Then we have available improvements the ZR1 doesn't, like tubular K-members.
On the other hand, our cars do come with lighter brakes, but as has been noted, require help with the rear axle, the transmission, and subframe connectors.
Still, beating a $100,000 car for under $ 20,000 is possible, and will give you some cred. Plus it will feel good.
