New Engine Options
I will be getting a new 350 in the coming months after a short tour overseas, and am wondering as to what options would suit my needs best. I am opting for a sbc over an lsx due to labor costs of the required changes such as the k member, mounts, and such. A sbc would be mostly plug and play. Second, i want it to be efi, such as a FAST or edelbrock system, for reliability, tunability, and a better diagnostic system lest any issues arise. I autocross and attend the occasional drift event, so something with a higher rpm band would be helpful, thus moving gm truck engines away from the list. I dont need a huge powerhouse, as id like to avoid having to swap the WC t5 that I just rebuilt, but if I have to, i will. Something north of 300 rwhp would be fine for the events I use the car for. So, TGO, what are some options?

Well, it finally happened. Head gasket blew on the drive home, oil pressure dropped, engine seized! Looks like a swap is for sure now!

Re: New Engine Options
Since the 290 horse 350 from gm has the same bottom end from what I see as the 330 horse HO model, would it sound reasonable to have that swapped instead, and after the warranty is up swap the heads and cam out for more power? Anyone see a reason against this?

Re: New Engine Options
Stick with a 1 pc rear seal motor with roller cam provision. L31 long block is a good option but will require a vortec specific intake.

Re: New Engine Options
The 300 rear wheel horsepower would be very easy to achieve through a Borg Warner T-5 with a L31 Vortec 350 engine as previously said. However the transmission will not last at your desired power level.
The L31 Vortec 350 engine with a camshaft and valve springs, screw-in rocker arm studs, machined down valve guides, and a four barrel carbureted intake manifold with your choice of EFI four barrel throttle body will get you well over your power demands.
Look into an Edelbrock vortec RPM air-gap intake, Comp cams extreme energy cam and matching valve springs. This will get you around 430HP at the crank with the cam ground in the .500" lift range and the 220* duration @0.050 range.

new engine, too much HP?
Rebuilding a sbc 350 and it's a great build and I'm about to install but it's pushing about 350hp to the rear wheels I feel like that's too much for a base model 87 firebird it's a 700r4 auto trans. I'm not sure what I should do any ideas?

Re: New Engine Options
Shouldn't be a problem although the trans may need a refresh AND a transgo shift kit will help it survive.

Re: New Engine Options
Trans has been rebuilt not even a year ago, rear end is getting rebuilt as soon as I'm done with the engine, it's going to be a car I'll drive on the weekends and such. So just install shift kit? Going to also install the wonder bar that came on the iroc z on it as well but should I need any other bracing? Thanks.

Re: New Engine Options
I'd recommend the shift kit, although it may not be necessary. For an 87 trans without the auxiliary valve body, contact Dana at Probuilt. He recommended the Transgo Jr for me several years ago.
Subframe connectors help an awful lot in stiffening the body.
