From 2.8L V6 to 4.3L V6?
From 2.8L V6 to 4.3L V6?
Hey everybody,
My 2.8L V6 is unfortunately falling apart on me and can't be driven normally anymore. I was thinking, a 1994 4.3L V6 from a S10, what'd be necessary to do the swap in terms of modification?
V8's here are generally a lot more expensive, for a decent one at least, and it'd cost a lot of money and quite some hassle presumably to have it approved in my country (just dropping a V8 in, calling it a day and starting to drive around in it the next would be rather illegal and insurance would not cover anything if accidents were to occur and I'd be liable.)
But yeah, nearly 200hp would be pretty neat I'd say, especially coming from barely 120hp!

Thanks in advance, you guys!

A 3.4L would be easier but the 4.3L has been done. Using the search feature and searching for "4.3L swap" there are a few threads. I would start by reading these.

The 4.3L is almost the same as swapping in a V8. Same mounts and requires a change for the transmission.
The 3.4L from a 4thgen is much closer to a direct bolt in.

When doing the 2.8-3.4 swap you keep ALL of your 2.8 accessories, intake, manifolds, sensors, and the like. All you use from the 3.4 is the block and heads. The lower intake manifold is different on the 3.4. I'll have to find my comparison pictures from when I did the swap, but I'll post them when I find them.

I have done the 3.4 swap, it's pretty easy. There's not modifying of wiring or custom parts, or anything like that. Do some reading in the V6 forum, or search for it, there's a ton of info on it.

Keeping in mind that with a V6 the value of the car will always be lower than with a V8, unfortunately. The 3.4L might be a good option but then so might be getting a 5.7L V8 and transmission from a let's say 70's or something Caprice without any fancy computers just a straight forward carb (despite having to let it be inspected to make it legal, but my boss says it's not all that much of a hassle if you've done the conversion decently). Or even a big block for that matter, but I doubt that's interesting for any potential buyers, but then again it might be. Thanks for the replies by the way, guys!

Yeah, but imagine them beeing a whole lot more expensive than what they are for you guys. This will have to happen on a pretty low budget to be honest, or it'll take real long before it can happen and probably won't happen then as my income as an apprentice at a customshop isn't all that high.

Depending on your budget, swapping from a V6 to V8 is going to be a lot more money. Switching to a carb is also going to have added costs. The 3.4 is going to be your only "straight forward" swap. That will have a few additional items, but will be the best way to go for cost.

That engine in the picture looks like its a 2.8-3.1 tbi engine to me, might even be a fwd version.
A 4.3 tbi engine would have center bolt valve covers, tbi mount would be straight/not angled, & it would be wider.
If its a 2.8-3.1 it should bolt right in, swap over your mpi stuff. A fwd tbi will have the starter on the wrong side.
