88 L98 Question?
So I'm looking at a L98 complete with harness and ecm to buy and the guy says its an 88 L98 350 with a MAP(speed density) ecm. I though only 90-92 were speed density and 89 and earlier were MAF.? I'm gonna swap it in to my 92 RS CV which currently has a 305 TBI LG4? Also I was wondering if the harness will work with my car? Thanks. I been a v6 boy for a while so I really want this 350

Re: 88 L98 Question?
88 would be maf and uses a 1227165 ecm.
There are harnesses for birds and ones for camaros.
The differences are ccp wire length and battery cable being on the other side of the car. The harness will work but you will need to compare connector C100 pinout.

Yeah that's what I thought. So if its a MAP it's definitely 90-92 L98 or maybe a 88 L98 with a 90-92 ecm and harness? Should be plug and play right? Gonna go check it out tommorow. Any numbers on the block that will help me identify the year?

Re: 88 L98 Question?
There will be a 5.0 or 5.7 l on the block behind the drivers side cylinder head.
if it’s speed density the ecm is a 1227730.
compare C100 between the years, should be the same .
c207 might be different, tbi uses a Vss buffer and sd tpi has the buffer in the ecm. It might be a matter of just removing the Vss buffer from the tbi.

Are you planning to use the TPI or stay with the TBI? I picked up a complete L98 but for simplicity I'm going to stay with the TBI just upgrade it a bit.

Re: 88 L98 Question?
Hmm haven't thought about that. I was hoping I could swap in the whole setup and run the TPI setup for the power gains. Then again I could just swap blocks and slap my TBI setup on the 5.7 would make it that much simpler. Hmm. I heard the L98 run and sounds real good. I'll have to wait and see when I have things in front of me.

I think the TPI looks really cool and sometimes wish I would have just made that swap but I do like the simplicity of the TBI and it has given me ZERO problems.

Re: 88 L98 Question?
So I just got the motor and trans home. Definitely a 5.7. Trans is a 85 model and is slipping. Didn't want it but my guy threw it in the deal. Can use it for parts if my other tranny needs. So I'm assuming motor is a 85 as well. And it was a MAF ECM 165. Now I'm really not sure what to do with it. First I'm gonna remove trans and put motor on the stand and test compression. I'm assuming my 92 TBI car harness wont plug and play with this 85ecm and(I'm assuming) harness. If the harness doesn't work I think I'm just gonna swap my TBI setup onto this 5.7 block (If it's worthy). If it's junk I'm just gonna run my 305 motor and eventually build this 5.7 block.

Re: 88 L98 Question?
There wasn’t a 5.7 option in 85 for the f body. If it has the 165 ecm it is from 86-89. Without the cold start injector it’s 89.

Re: 88 L98 Question?
Yeah I just made the assumption since the trans is a 85. Still new to the v8s. Second digit on trans is 5. How would I know if it's a roller cam engine? Tag on the back of pass side head says it's a 86-89 from the cast number sticky on this forum. But it says it could be either. Well I'm gonna tear it down and find out I guess. Gonna do a compression test. Is it pretty safe to say the compression will be low or not good by it being such an old engine? Or would it still be good if it was maintained..
