New combo hp estimate?

Hello all and hope you are blessed! I've been a long time reader here but never registered, figured it was time lol. I would like to get some personal experience info on my HP estimation on my setup. Its basic, 1998 350 vortec, .30 over, edlebrock dual plan intake, Holley 650, hooker shorty headers, stock internals, electric fan and no ac, standard hei distributer from autozone. Anyone have a combo like this and got some dyno numbers? Also, sorry if there is ready information on this question, I haven't come across it. Thanks in advance.

Re: New combo hp estimate?

You're probably looking at 275-300hp at the flywheel.

Thanks for the reply it is greatly appreciated. Just got my rebuilt 700r4 installed, few more things to do before she's roadworthy again. Can't wait to drive her again.

If you are going carb why not put a mild cam in there and easily get more than 30+ hp out of it? Lots of cams under .470 lift you can run that are far superior to the anemic stock cam.

Thats a good suggestion. I haven't done the research on a cam swap with my stock heads tbh. 30 hp would be a nice little bump up. Not looking to have a race car so I'd be happy with that.

Re: New combo hp estimate?

The stock L31 cam is very mild and that motor will respond very well to a mild cam upgrade. Even a stock L98 or LT1 cam would be a big improvement and still idle like stock. There are a few GMPP cams as well that are under .470 lift that would work well. I would also swap the valve springs (GMPP 330HO springs would work) if you go with more lift over stock. It's up to you and your comfort level of going into the motor. If you want to leave the internals alone and run it as is, it will still be a nice combo with plenty of hp to have fun.

Re: New combo hp estimate?

With an L98 cam and stock Vortec 350.. headers,650DP, eddy intake, etc. my friends S10 turned 12.9s so I would put that at roughly 325 HP. I ran a flat tappet 218-218 465 lift Doug Herbert cam on a 350 with Vortecs and it was strong enough to demolish my 10 bolt and run 13.7s with 3.08 gears and stock converter. I believe with 3-42s and 2400 stall it would have dipped into low low 13 sec range putting it at 325-350 HP roughly. These Vortec engines have a lot of potential for daily driven cars they can be very quick without sacrificing drivability.

Re: New combo hp estimate?

Lots of great info guys. So in regards to those cams, which one would wake her up the most? I can't say I wouldn't love a big choppy cam, (who doesn't) but I want to do head work and a few supporting mods to compliment a big cam later in life when I have the money, and also so it's not out of commission so I can drive it to work. So right now a few extra hp would be nice. I have the 2 73 rear, open diff. For a DD it's perfect for what I need. When I get another car. I'll start working on making her my dream car👍. Thanks again for the info.

If you post in the WTB section of the forum for an L98 or LT1 cam, you can probably get one very cheap. There are likely a bunch of those hanging around collecting dust that were taken out for cam swaps.
