L8T / 10l80 Swap in ‘86 Z28

Starting in on Gen V 6.6 / L8T (gmc 3/4 ton) and 10l80 Tahoe trans in a ‘86 Z28.

Haven’t test fit engine, only removing parts at the moment. Have Aeromotive fuel system, Swaptime harness, Misc install parts already. Need get recommendations on motor/trans mounts, sort out a torque arm, etc. and then get after it.

longtime reader first post, I’ve wanted one of these 3rd gens bad for awhile!

Excited to see a test fit! I've posted a thread on 10L80 fitment into these cars in the past, theorizing that it should be possible with minimal or no adjustment to the tunnel, but this could clear that up quick!

Hawk's has a 10L90 transmission mount specifically for these cars btw.

Thanks man! I’ll check out your post, talked to the hawks guys I’m hoping to not have to change oil pan which their kit seems to require, could be impossible though

Aren't those 10l90 transmissions huge?? I thought I read somewhere people had to cut the tunnel just to get a 6l80 to fit right. Good luck with the swap! Should be awesome once it's all said and done

So, hear me out... LSXMATT on youtube got a 6L80 to fit in the tunnel with only some minor adjustment with a hammer, and some clean-up to the top of the transmission. With it in the car, I think we can say that a 6L80 CAN be done without cutting the tunnel.

The 8L90 is designed to fit where the 6L80 does. They have nearly identical casings. If the 6L80 fits, the 8L90 should too. (Actually more clearance since the bolted on "Bell Housing" of the 6L80 is cast into the 8L90)

The 10L80 is designed to fit where the 8L90 does. The 10L80 seems to have a bit taller of a pan, though the top ridge of the casing is nearly identical to the 8L90. If anything, the 10L80 should only protrude a little lower than the 8L90. I've seen some luck swapping pans, though that can only do so much. I would certainly NOT lower a car with a 10L80 in it.

See my other thread for some neat size comparisons. It highlights the concepts waaay better than I can describe.

All that in mind... a 10L80 might work. Theory is good, but practice is better!

They put 'em in alpha cars, so they can't be that big. A big transmission is the 10R1000 they put behind the LP5 in the heavy duty trucks.

I would definitely be interested in test fit also. I am debating on going this route also. Thanks

More tear down, super bad cowl/firewall rust y’all have any recommendations on that other than start cutting and patching? Going to sandblast whole frame, then start assembling, can’t decide if I’m going LS K-member with LS->LT swap plate and customs trans mount, or full kit from Hawks.
