Older 3884520 heads on 87 350 block?
Older 3884520 heads on 87 350 block?
Hello everyone, I am new here so be patient while I figure stuff out. I have a couple questions, will these 3884520 heads work on this 87 350 block?
This combination will be going into a 1951 Henry J. I do not need the engine to be a powerhouse just simply something that will run and move. Her is a little info about both parts. The 350 block is rebuilt and is 100% standard stock, it has NOT been decked or bored and has the dished pistons and 4 valve reliefs, it was in amazing condition when rebuilt (low mileage). The heads are off a 67 327 and have been freshly gone thru and rebuilt by a machine shop. They have been cleaned and checked for imperfections, new hardened guides installed, new 194 valves installed, and new springs installed. They are nicely done and are ready to go. Again I have almost 0 dollars to finish this combination off but do have all the parts currently to put it together. I don't need it to be a powerhouse just simply something that will start and run and move the car on its own power as it has not done so in 20 years lol. It will never see over 3500 rpm and just go to local shows. There is a much more bigger and powerful engine planned in the future for this car. This isn't my first my engine build but it is kind of new using older technology like the heads. Soooooo, my questions are,
Will these work on this 87 350 block?
Will it run like a stock block?

Just curious why ? Are the heads same cc as the ones that came off the 350 ?
hardened seats ? Probably not accessory bolt holes . Do you have a older intake manifold?

Yes I have an Edelbrock intake already, yes they have hardened seats. I've read that the 520's have a cc of about 60-65 and the 193's have a cc of about 64-66. I would normally do this totally different but have already done so much fab work on the car. I have all the these parts in my stash and they are ready to go. I literally would spend nothing to put this combo together, I have everything right down to the gaskets. The heads do have accessory bolt holes. The only option I will be using will be a alternator, no power steering at this point. the two major components are literally freshened and at my disposal as soon as i walk in the garage. I also have a new cam from a 400 build i recently did. If I had extra money I would redo the block, pistons, rods differently and have aftermarket heads but the money is not available right now. Its my wife's car and her dream car. Its been sitting in the corner of our garage for 20 years and she hasn't been able to drive it, so Now is the time. We have a different engine planned but it wont be done for another year or 2.

new hardened guides installed
yes they have hardened seats
Frankly I think you'd be wasting your gasket money if you bolted that crap up to your block. You'd be money ahead to trade them in for a pair of 73-up heads, or sell them to The Greater Fool (yes, there IS one, somewhere; one thing I've learned in my short sojourn on this miserable cosmic cinder is that no matter how foolish the fool you've already found is, there's ALWAYS A Greater Fool) and use the cash to buy a more nearly modern set with hardened seats and accessory bolt holes.
Post up a pic.

sofakingdom, thanks for you dumbf*** response, so much for respectable discussion among car guys and gals. These do have the bolt holes, these are not the early models. But running pre 69 stuff wasnt a big deal because its just an alternator as previously stated. I was respectfully asking about the compression ratio but thought that it may be kind of close. My thought was that with the original deck height and dished pistons along with the 4 relief spots in the piston it might be kind of close but also realizing it may go up some. I already knew about it not being a powerhouse but didn't care! Ill have to look at the receipt from the machine shop and make sure my terminology is correct.

Glad you don't want to know what you're doing.
"Respectful discussion" involves telling the truth yourself, and listening to those who have more experience and knowledge than you do, even when they tell you things you don't want to hear. Since 3884520 is a 62-67 casting, and the bolt holes were introduced MUCH later than that casting, one of 2 things is true: EITHER, you don't have that casting, OR you're not telling the truth (like, perhaps you don't know what's meant by "accessory bolt holes").
Those are 62-67 283 & 327 2-bbl heads. They don't have the accessory bolt holes because those weren't introduced until 1967, and in that year they were ONLY on 350s, and those heads weren't included since the casting was from 62. They gave the heads that DID have the bolt holes, new casting numbers, because the castings were DIFFERENT.
The pre-69 alternator bolts onto the exhaust manifold. There are bracket systems to replicate this of course, for those using headers and whatnot; but as far as the stock ones, they went to the manifold. My 60 Chevy 283 for example was that way, as was my late little bro's 64 Impala 283, my brother-in-law's 66 Impala 327 (although his was a 4-bbl), my old business partner's wife's 57 Bel Air 283, I could go on.
Here are what "bolt holes" look like. Top is some without them (461 casting if memory serves, 65 or so up to 68 327); bottom is with them (186, 69-71 or so 350), after the new alternator placement, long water pump, completely different accessory drive system, and different exh manifolds (without the boss that supported the alternator), were introduced broadly in 69.

Insulting people who know what they're talking about is not a good way to get at the truth. I'll overlook it this one time; after that, you're on your own.

Here's another picture of some of the 69-up "bolt holes" that 62-67 3884520 doesn't have.
