take off nose to put in new motor?

Hey guys,
I'm getting ready to put in my new block and was looking at the length of the nose, is it necessary to pull the nose off to put the motor in? Or is the boom long enough? I just got the car painted (then the engine died) so I don't want to scratch it up.

It's not necessary at all to take the front bumper off, although you'll want to remove the hood.

Take out the radiator though. Don't want to punch a hole in that. Other than that and te hood, you're good.

yeah, I made the same mistake, and ended up fu##in up my front bumper and scrathing it.

You need to take off the hood, and take the motor out from the side of the car, it help to take the tire off the side of the car the hoist is going under.
also, if you do it his way, you dont evenneed to take out the radiator or the belt driven accesories, unless ou have a electric fan, cuz thats bitch to get around!

Depends on the hoist you get. The short versions will not reach. Putting it in from the side... that doesnt sound like fun.

Hmm, I used the tow truck to swap mine the last time. I put the wheels in the wheel lift and pulled the engine with the twin line boom. Really that made it too easy, I could move the car front/back-up/down- and tilt, the engine was able to be lifted/lowered-moved front/back and tilted side to side.

Thanks for the replys. It's a standard size picker - what about putting the pin in the last hole to give the maximum amount of reach? That'll help out alot I think.
I just don't want to scratch up the nose with paint that's only one year old.
The block will be on the lighter side with aluminum heads and intake.

If your's is standard size, it should reach no problem. However, when the engine is being lifted, it will want to move forward and press on the car. Just use some wheel chocks on the engine hoist wheels to keep it from mushing the nose of the car.

You shouldnt have any problems. To be safe though, put a large blanket on the nose to protect the paint.

Heh, I should take a pic of the hoist I've got. It's a lift and a press all in one and it uses a hydrolic ram off of a B17. The ram was used on the bomb bay doors. Quick action pump and a hand crank with an up/down lever plus pressure gauge lol... got it at an auction where I picked the car up.

The car was at the auction in the garage with a for sale sign in it.. I picked that up the day after the auction for a new project to work on. The hoist was kind of a necessity at the time just because of the press part of it, buying the car was an afterthought Price was right on the hoist, 50 bucks! I'll try and get a pic up later today.

Excuse the mess but here's an old picture of it with a dang F*rd motor and tranny at the end of it. That hoist also has a bar that you can steer the front wheels with and one for the rear. Makes things nice hehe you can make it go sideways at about a 45* angle.

Yee haw, first post on this board, just bought an 86 RS T-Top car for $200....
I will help you guys out, the one tool that you should invest in that every guy should have when pulling a motor is a ..................................................................engine tilter. This is the best tool I have ever owned, lol. You can get them from Summit etc. for about $75 and makes pulling an engine a whole lot easier. Im sure you could tilt the engine down enough to get it past the nose. Have fun and good luck.
