Yes it will. But sound will also depend on compression and cam. I just pulled a 327 out of a rig that had dual 2 1/4 flows, and put in a 355 with the next cam up XE262. The 355 sounds terrible compared to the way the 327 did. So yes they are definately different.
hey chevymad, hows that cam sound. im ordering one soon for my 305. is the idle lopey? does it sound like this---> http://www.mnfbody.com/media/IdleandQuickRev.wav

The following will definately affect exhaust sound:
Muffler.
Cat.
Headers.
Single vs. dual exhaust.
Cam.
Heads.
Induction type.
Tuning (just ignition timing will affect exhaust note).
Stroke.
Bore diameter is probably way down there on things that will have a noticeable effect on exhaust sound.
FWIW, I played Mark's sound clip on my computer at home. My wife, not knowing what I was doing, asked me how I got a recording of the Camaro on the computer...

welp...i have a 305 with an aggressive cam profile and hooker headers to no cats...to a flowmaster 40 series...it sounds WICKED...3 inch pipes too....ohh...and when you stomp on it...you know it....I like the way my 305 sounds....its got a LOPEY cam....the tach likes to "jump"...Its deep sounding...and it likes to have the soft gargle like most 3rd and 4th gens do....
I LOVE THE SOUND OF MY CAR....I need to get a sound clip of it...

i dunno the exact specs on it...i bought the car with the cam already installed...but its very lopey...the rpms go from about 600 to 1000....the cam is mostly for the mid range and top end. The car pulls all the way to 6500 rpm and chirps the tires in to second (remember its a 3 speed)
