A second question about SLP headers (really need this answered)

Ok, here my deal. I plan on ordering headers this week for my car, and as stated in my previous post, I plan on going w/ 1 3/4 headers b/c everyone says since i'm gonna be dropping a 350 in, in the near future, this would be a wise investment. Anyway, I called up SLP today to get a final cost for everthing so i could get money squared away. I told the SLP rep what i wanted and he told me these headers would make my car extremely slow and that i would loose low end. I stated to him that i know of a bunch of guys who run this size on 305's and he just repeated what he said. So is this guy right? Will i just be pissing my 800 bucks away here or should i just go ahead and order them? I want to have them ordered by thursday latest so i hope hear from some of you guys soon, thanx

EDIT: Hmm, i just read a post a few lines down and it seems most people say that the 1 5/8 size can flow up to 400hp...i dont plan on going THAT high, although it would be nice...so maybe the guy was right...I mean my engine wont be going in for at least 3 months anyway...well, comments are VERY welcome

Order the 1.75" headers, they are just going by the application guide at SLP.When you finally install a larger motor it will thank you for it.

I agree but where are you getting $800 from? Is that for the headers or more than that?

The 800+ bucks is for the headers (w/ y pipe), install kit, cat adapter and shipping. I think it came out to like 818 bucks or something like that. I was surprised how cheap it was. Oh ya, its w/ the coated header too. One more thing, i'm still worried about the guy saying that the headers will make my car sluggish in the low end and thats something i dont want. Should i be worrying about this or not?

1. you don't "need" the coated.
2. look for a group purchase. Get some non-coated ones for $375.

I thought getting them coated was better b/c it keeps under hood temps down? Although w/ my cowl hood, heat exits a lot quicker than it used to But anyway, i shouldnt shell out the extra cash for coated then?

Please don't spend 800 on headers. You could almost get a nice set of fast burn heads for that 350 for that. Either wait for a group purchase or go with a different brand. I think I got my headers, cat adapter, install kit, y pipe, and shipping for $600.

i have the SLP 1 3/4 headers on my 305. i felt no low end torque loss, and gained 3/10's and 3mph from the headers alone.

I wish I would have gotten mine coated, they rusted and looked bad after about five minutes of run time.

nick

And get the 1 3/4.

The only reason the guy is telling you that is because you may lose low end performance with the bigger header on the smaller engine and if he doesn't tell you that and you buy the headers and aren't happy, he can say he told you so. The fact that you are putting them on a mostly stock 305 is what is making him say that (and the CYA factor). If you told him you really don't care if you lose a little low end on your 305 (keep in mind that lots of people say they didn't lose much - if any - low end even on their 305s and that the gain in high end is more than worth it) and want the best header for a 330+ HP 350 (which is what you need to isolate your main goal to), he would likely change his tune.

And keep in mind that LOTS of people start out saying they just want "a mild street-driven 350" and end up getting crazy later on, so...........

FYI, you can save money on the headers and shipping if you get them through Summit. I paid ~500 for my headers *and* the install kit, and the shipping/handling was only 8.95, as opposed to SLP's ridiculous 30 or so.

Got mine coated at Jet-Hot, grand total for SLP dual cat headers coated: 720. Don't pay 800 bucks.

$800 is a little high for headers. That could be more money you could put in the engine. Order everything through summit, they have good prices and free shipping (usually). As for the 3/4" primaries, you won't lose much low end even on your 305, and you will be thanking yourself later when you don't have to go out and buy another set of headers because they are restricting your engine.

Well heres the pricing deal..

Headers thru SLP coated w/ y pipe, install kit, cat adapter and shipping=817.80

SLP Headers thru Summit non coated=479.95 plus S&H (if any)
Jet-Hot coating=229 plus shipping to them
Install kit=79.95 thru SLP (unless Summit carries it)
Y pipe=199.99 (again, unless Summit sells it w/ the headers)
TOTAL COST=788.90 (thats leaving out ypipe assuming it comes w/ the headers and it includes install kit)

So thats the deal that i've come up w/. So i'm saving roughly 30 bucks plus other expenses i may need in the end. Hmm...i need to look alittle more stuff up. By the way, I'm getting em installed for under 200 thru one of my buddies so install wont be a biggy (although i am going to be helping him alittle so i can learn cause i know squat about install on these) Oh, crap, i also need to get a new catco cat...thats another 30 to 50 bucks..oh well

Try www.thirdgenresource.com.

They list the headers (1 3/4 or 1 5/8), without A.I.R., coated, for $534.99 ($379.99 uncoated), the install kit for $75 and the cat adapter to go to a single 3" cat for $35. They qouted me $40 for shipping.

But that still makes about $680 shipped to your door if you go with the install kit and the cat adapter - $640 if you just find header bolts on your own and use your brain and re-route the plug wires so they don't get cooked on the headers.

And yes, all of the SLP kits come with the Y-pipe - not coated though. Only the headers themselves are coated if you buy them coated through SLP (or a SLP dealer like Summit or Thirdgenresource).

Summit carries the install kits, that's where I got mine. Get SLP's part number and just look up SLP-# on Summit's site. I.e., SLP-30003 is Summit's part number for uncoated dual cat headers w/ AIR.
