which headers come with or have available a 3' y-pipe
So far in my look for headers I have decided that
1. SlP is too damn expensive and have heard of fittment issues.
2. edelbrock a little pricey but nice and fit well.
3. Headman cheap but small 2/ 1/2 y-pipe.
may just go this route.
What hooker shortys come with a y-pipe or have a seperate one available. what size are the primaries? and what size is the y-pipe? how much are they and what is the part #s
the car is a 91 bird Lo3 single cat. The cat will be replaced w/ 3 inch pipe when the headers go on.

if its price based then it will be edelbrock at $315 or hedman forget the price or the hooker 1 5/8 shorties at $349 with a 3 in y pipe. ('http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=25925',650,505,'HOK2055');
if your going to a 3 in. system the dont worry about the yr just the diameters.

so loking in summit at edelbrock I want the 86-90 TPI single catalyst set right? EDL 6872 (what is the ed. PN.?)
The other is for 88-92 5.0 tbi like I have but the dif between is that the tbi uses a 2 1/4 cat instead of a 3 right?
and sice Im going 3 anyway I want the first one. correct?

for edelbrock correct go with the 1st 1 for the 86-90 cars and the 3 in y pipe it will still fit or the hooker 2055. its your money and your choice so buy the one that fits your car and budget best.
some people bang on edelbrock for the y pipe (the way its merges the 2 pipes together) but according to edelbrocks website that is part of the design.

Do the Hookers. Edelbrocks suck. They make far too many comprimises for fitment and ease of installation.... The primaries are stepped on some of the tubes and still others are severely crimped in at the head to make access to the bolts easier. They are definately better than stock manifolds, but nowhere near as good as Hookers and SLPs.
Also, be sure to check out the collectors on whatever you buy, as most of them can be trimmed on the inside to flow a lot better.
And if you want to make big power in the long run, long tubes are the way to go, so keep that in mind.

five7, what are the specs and cost of the hok 2055? I was considering hedman because the cost and I haven't found a hooker 3" y-pipe. do they sell it together? And what is your opinion of the differences?

You may have been looking at HOK-2460. They call those their "Comp" shorties, $141, but no pre-fabricated y-pipe is available for them.
HOK-2055 are 1-5/8" primary, 2-1/2" collector and downpipe, 3" slip-fit at the cat (no neck-down between joining of down-pipes to the cat). Cost is $349.95 from Summit.
I agree with the collector statement. It is a ball-flange joint with 1.9" diameter opening as delivered. I did a fit check of the y-pipe, noted where the down-pipe flanges fit on the ball, then opened up the ball flange to 2-1/4" centered where the down-pipe mated (used a 3.5" electric angle grinder - that's what worked best). Hooker said they were fine as delivered ("prevents leaks"), but I prefer it the way it is now. If it didn't make any difference in performance, it did make a difference on how I felt about it.
I also used FelPro 1404 gaskets to the heads. Didn't care much for the pieces they sent with the headers.
Obviously, the Hookers aren't perfect. But, the deficiencies are relatively minor and easy to work around.

those are painted, correct? How much for coated? I probally wont be buying real soon (buying springs, LCAs, and LCA relocater kit before dropping in motor), but I want to figure it out before I buy. Thanks for the info.

Add a "-1" to the p/n for ceramic coated. Doing a Summit search on "HOK-2055-1", it comes up with $625.99, back-ordered (in other words, they'll order it when you order it).
The HOK-2055's are black painted - also known as "shipping paint", not intended to last when installed. I stripped and painted mine with 1500 degree DEI paint from Summit. The headers came out okay, because I baked them before installation. The y-pipe was too big to fit in the kitchen oven, I tried an installed cure - didn't work as well. Wish I could have sprung for the coated...
