loud exhaust ,i need help

I would like my 85 trans am with a v8 and 305 tpi to be loud. I have the stock exhaust. I dont want to get headers or tips. I like the tips to be hidden, and headers are too much work, so they are out as an idea. I dont know whether to get rid of the muffler, hollow it out , hollow the cat out . I need help. If i get rid of the muffler i will lose low end right.

Loud may seem cool at first but when you start pissing off your neighbors, getting pulled over, etc. you'll wish you were nice and quite. Not trying to be a smart-*** but a good way to be loud is to have horsepower. More HP = more exhaust = more sound.

Cutting off the muffler will only make you sound like an old rusted out 1975 pick-up truck.

Just cut your muffler off with a sawzall, it will not be that loud. I did the same thing on my 85 TA, you will not lose that much low end power and it will pull better at upper rpms. It is also very easy to take the cat off of your car, since it bolts in.

It will not be that loud, especially with the cat still in place, I think you will be very happy with it. It will sound good.

If anything, you could always get a good cat back system. Bolts right up, mellow at idle, loud as hell WOT, and help in performance. Also will be legal and can be hidden very well.

What would happen it the cat was gutted or taken out. Do i get any performance. Im just worried if i take it out that something in the computer will registed that the car has something wrong. SO if i took the cat and hollowed it out it should be fine. I really want the car to be loud but if the muffler is gone ill lose low end and i dont want to lose low end. Im really in a dilemma.

nolan, I have a TPI motor with the cat gutted, its been gutted since before I got the car, I have never had any sort of problem with the computer because of it, the closest sensor is the O2 sensor...which is measuring the exhaust before it gets to the cat. Gutting or removing the cat will result in better exhaust flow, but not any more noise.

You really will not lose that much power with no muffler and a gutted CAT. I made the mistake of buying a flowmaster for my 85 TA, before I cut the muffler off. I did not make the mistake again, and one the first mods on my 89 TA was taking a sawzall to the muffler.

i think that i will get rid of the cat or have it gutted and have the muffler taken off to hear what it sounds like then if i like it i will have the exhaust piped to the same spot with no muffler.

In my opinion (keyword: opinion) no muffler is the biggest most thrashy thing you can do to your car. You will sound like a complete hillbilly. Might as well grow a ****** haircut and listen to 1980's hairband rock really loud. Also be sure to spray paint your car while you are at it.

Buy a real cat-back and be done with it.
