WTF - Torx Bits SUCK!

This is kinda exhaust related. Vic and Mike know about my ongoing battle with my smog pump. I have now ripped the threads off of TWO T-45 TORX bits trying to get the lower bolt off of my smog pump so I can remove it. Its not hooked up to anything anymore so why have it. So now I've taken it all apart and put it back together 3 times (the first time i didn't know I needed a big TORX bit and didn't have one, 2nd and 3rd time I had the bit and broke the **** ). The top one came out easy, do you think drenching it with some penetrating oil and letting it sit a while would help or am I doing something wrong here? I'm not even using an impact I'm doing this by hand. Its not like I'm king kong either, I'm not real big.

What bolts do you have to remove to get the pump out. I was looking at mine and can't seem to find where to take the pump off. How many bolts hold it on to the belt assembly?

If your setup is the same as mine -serp. belt that is, you have to take the pulley off to access the mounting bolts. Once its off, theres just one up top and another on the bottom. You can't just take the pulley off and run it that way either, the belt hits the pump itself because of how far it sticks out. Argh.

Nope, weren't crafsman. They were sold out. Next one I buy will be, I'm sick of buying new ones. Warranty is a good thing. Let this be a lesson to everyone. I bought another Lisle or whatever the brand was cause I figured maybe I just got a crappy one and they aren't all like that. Wrong. They are.

Try getting the bolt out when the engine is HOT. Drive the car around until it hits normal operating temp and then let it sit for 5 minutes (the engine will get hotter after you turn it off). The try to bust the SOB lose with a name brand socket... like you said, your gonna be getting a Craftsman.

Good luck,
Mike

We had to do this on my friends car and it tore up one bit, but I used a better bit and had no problem. I would say try getting a craftsman.

Man, I gotta take a picture of the bits just for the "wall of shame." I'm gonna probably go buy a craftsman bit tomorrow hopefully they got more in. I'm gonna try the warm motor thing too.
