how - silenced exhaust that sets off car alarms

i was down at the weekly car show in my town and this guy had an old camaro, like 67 or 68. he had put a lot of work into it and i could see it running when he opened the hood but there was no exhaust note to it, just a really super low continuous bass thrum that i almost couldn't hear, i just mostly felt it. a car alarm went off when he turned his car on to leave. what the hell did he have between his headers and his tips ?

it was more than likely a 396 big block. my friend has a 67 camaro with a 396. REALLY REALLY deep bass tone to it. unless he has some weird bass muffler im pretty sure he just had a big block.

also since you say you saw under the hood, where the valve covers abnormally wide? thats the sign of a big block. just incase you didnt know.

Can't say what mufflers for sure, probably something that has a very low tone to it (ok thank you capt. obvious i know) but I would guess that he had turn downs before the axel. Those produce that sort of sound, and create a lot of interior droning as well. Since the tips aren't really exposed, all the sound you hear is indirect, and you mostly hear the resonance and the sound reflecting/echoing between the car and the pavement though it can be quite loud, especially in a high HP large displacement car.

ya it was def a big block bc it filled the bay more than my 350 does in my '89 GTA, and it did have wide covers - the guy had them fully flamed with some embossing. really cool, for a show car.

come to think of it, does anyone have pics of a t/a rear with turndowns ( i.e. the exhaust tips can't be seen ) ? i'm thinking of getting a borla exhaust but maybe i can forgo the tips and have a clear bumper area since the borla tips are chrome and my wheels won't be

had to be big block. When they're healthy, they make the very ground you're standing on shake. To this day I can still remember the feeling of a Plymouth Roadrunner hemi driving by me: I could feel it coming an 1/8th mile behind me and another 1/8th after it went by...and that was many years ago indeed.
