gonna do headers...

Hey guys. I'm about 85% sure that i'm gonna put my t/a up in my garage for 3 weeks this winter and do some work on her... amongst the work, a carb rebuild and, yes, headers .

I'm just going to go with some cheap-o flow-techs, cause i'm not planning on keeping the car that long and can't justify dropping a few hundred dollars in just for some sound & performance.

I've never done headers before, so i wanted to get some info on the difficulty of this job. Fundamentally, it sounds relatively easy (aside from the whole doing all the work from underneath thing) so i think my buddy and I can handle it. But wanted to check in with all you 3rd gen gurus first.

BTW, my car is an LG4 trans am, No A/C and no AIR... which makes for a very open engine compartment .

Other question is that the previous owner had a new exhaust system put on from the cat back. What should i do as far as pipes go from the headers back to the cat? Can i buy pre-made pipe that will fit without involving any welding or pipebending? (as it would be extremely difficult to either tool, unfortunately )

Thanks for your help guys...

Just takes time. I'll pull the car up on ramps first, to take the y pipe off. Longest part is clearin room to take out the manifolds.

Took me about 6 hrs in the driveway to do, AC was already out though.

Cool.... i'm planning on 3 weeks of not-using-my-car time, so 6 hrs is nothing, haha.

So should the current y-pipe should fit headers made for an 82-92 f-body?

The stock y pipe will not fit any headers.

Most headers come with one, I know hedman doesn't though, just check to be sure.

just a word to the wise, I installed my headers, no major problems (small leak, but I'll get it fixed). I increased the size of the y-pipe to a 2 1/2 now the car is exactly quieter, good thing I got a cut out

Ok... i'm sorry, i didn't get whether or not you were recommending upgrading the y-pipe size or not. your interior noise or your actual exhaust sound is quieter?

thanks

heddman sells a y-pipe that goes with their headers. hooker makes 2 sets of shorty headers for 3rd gens...one comes with a y-pipe, the other does not have a y-pipe and one is not available, which means you will need a custom one. i can never remember whether it is the hooker comps or super comps that dont have the y-pipe.

For the price, I'm sure it's the Comps that don't , for $350 the Super Comp ones do.
