I wanna shoot flames from my tailpipes

Just imagine the look on a Mustang drivers face as you blow past him and two columns of flame fly out at him. Kinda like the 50's car they steal on gone in sixty seconds. I know how to do it with a carb, but is it possible with TPI?

The old way to do it was to pull the choke out and run the engine rich. A spark plug in the tail pipe would be used to ignite the rich mixture.

The car in the movie is strictly made for Hollywood. It uses fuel injectors to dump the fuel into the tailpipe for the spark plugs to ignite.

it gets pretty expensive if you want to do this the right way. but Im sure there are a hundred other bonehead ways to do it if you want to ruin your motor or blow something off your car!
do a search for this - I think I remember a couple of other posts on this.

in my buddies stang, he runs headers, no cat and a flowmaster i believe. all he does is hit the kill switch for a few secs and then turn it back on... shoots like 10 foot flames out (its a 12 sec car, and the kid currently will be having a mecham tt formula being delivered in may)

anyways, cool ****...

Does anyone know the right way to do this without ruining anything. Maybe even hooking the spark plug to a switch so all you have to do is flip a switch to shoot flames.

Like Stephen said...run rich, rich, rich and light it off with a spark plug in the tail pipe. My Dad used to do it in his 55 Ford back in "the day".

Just be sure to remove the cat. It's whole job is to remove all of those good HC gasses that make flames possible!

I wonder if a tailpipe extension would protect that vulnerable plastic bumper? Those flame-throwing cars of the 1950's flicks were made of HEAVY sheet metal!

Flames out the back and missiles from the front.
Drive with a tuxedo on and speak with a British accent.
Ohh I have plans for an ejection seat for sale. You do have T-tops???????

Just messing around man. Good luck with the flames. But flames at night will tell the cops where you are and the fire department too.

Would this be possible with an LT1? If so how do you run the injection rich? Would I even have to run it rich if I remove the cat??

Ya know I think I saw a similar setup the other day, but at the time I couldn't figure out why.
I saw a '95 silverado pickup and the guy had a coil strapped to the exhaust with a bung into the side of the pipe. Now I assume he shuts the motor off, electric fuel pump keeps going and then turns the key on, flips a switch for the coil and out come the flames. But honestly, I'm just guessing:confusion:

I was always under the impression that you just needed to open choke and dump extra fuel into the engine then spark the exhaust. I'm a little confused on the spark, I don't know how to make the spark plug fire without the distrib. About the cops etc. this is for fun like on a cruise night where you see nothing but fun cars once a week. Now the plastic bumper problem is no problem. What does it matter? The exhaust flame is going OUT, not straight up. The flame wouldn't make the exhaust pipes any hotter because it's like an arisal can and a lighter. Does your finger get really hot if you do it for a few seconds? Mine doesn't. About the direct fuel injectors in the exhaust, I've never seen that but I don't see why it couldn't be done, just kind of dangerous having a fuel line in the hot exhaust pipe don't you think? As for the 95 truck, I'm sure he didn't have a cat and I'm thinking he didn't have a stock engine either. In Somerville NJ during the summer there is a cruise night ever friday all summer long and the main street is always full of cars, sometimes it's a theme night and you half the cars are vettes. Anyways, there was one yellow 50's pickup truck with huge 4" dual exhaust going up behind the cab and all chrome, the bed wasn't finished but when he stroled by at like 5mph and then shot the flames out it warmed my face just looking at it. It was the coolest thing ever and I wish I had a video of it. I was just so excited to finally see something like that in NJ (not too often). He didn't get into any trouble because nobody was right behind him and the cops enjoyed the show as much as everybody else.

The TPI engines run rich anyway so i don't think that is a problem. You will need to gut the cat. Then mount 2 spark plugs in the tailpipes. I think you can use an old model T coil.. or any coil might do. hook the spark plugs up to the coil and then hook the coil to a FUSED connection throw a momentary switch on the power side to the coil. That should do it.
