I need cat back exhaust?Opinions on the new Mufflex and Mac exhaust

I need exhaust just finishing up my camaro.I have the SLP 1 3/4 inch headers and am contemplating a couple of cat backs.I have looked into Mufflex they seem to make a new system incorperating a 4inch intermediate pipe and duel 3 inch tailpipes,it must look killer,it uses a spintec muffler.I am also interested in the Mac system,Ive heard it on a mustang and it sound much better than flowmasters. Here is my problem though. My motor made 400hp on motor but I am also running a blower. The Mufflex system is $600 ,the Mac I can get for about $350 with chrome tips.Which is better for my car any opinions or experiences?thanks

I know if you have the dual cat setup you cannot go with MAC. I pretty sure the MAC system on the Camaro/Firebird doesn't sound as nice as they do on the Mustang. I guess it also depends on your headers and cat(s).

You've obviously spent alot of money on your motor to get 400hp N/A, superchargers are not cheap, either. Why skimp on the exhaust system. The Mac is 3". It will not support you horsepower level, especially when that wheezer goes on there. The Mufflex is the way to go IMHO. I use their 3.5" with Spintech. Fit and finish is very good. The 4" is better suited for a blower application.

Your are right,Calroc,I shouldnt skimp on the exhaust, but I would like to know anyone who has the new Mufflex system,I want to know specifics like fit and finish and,Sound, and will it bolt up to my cat,I know its only 3 inch outlet,so they must step it up after this.I like the MAC though, but dont want to kill alot of ponies choking my exhaust

The sound of the Spintech is awesome. You would be very pleased, and as I stated above, fit and finish is very good. No clearance problems, either. The slip-fit adapter narrows to 3" for the cat, but if you don't run a cat just cut the adapter off and replace it with a six inch piece of 4" tubing. That's what I did to butt-weld the intermediate pipe to my 3.5" Random Tech cat (I have the 3.5" system).

When my brother was going to order his 4" Mufflex cat-back, we asked if they had a muffler available with dual, stock-type exits, and their reply was, "We're working on a system right now, but it's only recommended for a stock exit look. Dual, opposite side exit mufflers do not flow very well compared to a straight through flow muffler." So we just got the full 4" system, and you can't even see the tailpipe without getting on your knees. This was back in early 2000.

Thanks MJT,I will want that dual look, nothing like massive 3 inch tips sitting under your bumper.Im still confused though, the better of me says, get the big mufflex, the other says ,those extra $300 will not get me alot more HP that alot of other catbacks. How loud it the Mufflex with the Spintech?Im just asking,Ive heard Flowmaster on a thirdgen and it sounds tinney to me,Ive had Dynomax and I loved the ddep rumble.I just dont want problems with the local law.Droning noise is not at all a concern,I have the blower whistle to agrivate me Thanks for all the reply,I really appreciate it,for this is a big purchase.

One solution for those that want the extra flow of a straight-through muffler and still want to maintain the dual-exhaust tips is to "Borla-ize" your exhaust. I've seen guys do that with other cat-back exhausts like SLP where they have a Y welded into the int. pipe before the muffler, and this Y generally has a 3-bolt flange on it. They run a tail-pipe from there to the pass. side so that it looks stock and then can run the bypass fully open or change out plates with different size holes, just like the Borla cat-back but a lot cheaper (especially if you already have a single-side cat-back).

Procharged-

It's very very loud, and surprisingly doesn't sound tinny. My buddy had a 3" flowmaster system and it does sound tinny. I think it's because the 4" Flowmaster is a different series. I just got a digital video camera and I'll be posting some movies of the car, so keep your eyes open next week if you want to hear it!

Hey procharged this is what I know. I have a 3 inch single outlet system and like it. I was thinking along the same lines as you on holding back ponies and thought a bigger pipe would be better. Then it happened. I rode in a stang the other day that had a turbo, y-pipe , 3 inch middle pipe that split into two 3 inch mufflers. This thing rocked. Can you sat 714 to the rear wheels! Belive me I saw him do it on the dyno. This made me think that I might not be choking mine with 3 inch exhaust. Oh well to each his own. By the way that was with 22lbs. boost.
