deadbird - Few questions for ya

1. Did you need a special crossmember for that setup?

2. That passenger pipe clearance looks REAL tight by the panhard bar brace - how does the suspension travel affect it?

3. How long are those mufflers?

Also, did you fab up that yourself, or have a shop do it? I want to try this myself after seeing this and Willie's setup. What kind of bends did you use?

Marc.. A few answers for ya

1. Honestly, I didn't need a special x-member but, I chose to modify mine to assure I'd have at least or better ground clearance than aftermarket 3" header/y-pipe/exhaust combos. I based front/mid ground clearance off the Edelbrock TES/y-pipe setup I had on the car prior to the Hooker/dual change.
Here's what I did to my x-member to assure max ground clearance...
http://www.deadbird.org/anews/xm02.jpg

2. No matter what angle I take the picture at, it will always look tighter than it really is (added pic below). While it's not as good as the pass side, the drivers side had 2" of clearance at it's tightest point w/about 1" more I can move it up if interference is an issue. The pipe (as appears above) doesn't actully run over the panhard bar but instead, wraps the spring a clears over the outmost point of the panhard mount (the 2" clearance). In all honesty, I laid under the car for a long period of time before deciding that if my suspension compresses suddenly more than 2".. I'm going be worrying about something other than the exhaust rubbing (that would be a hell of a bump).

3. The mufflers are exactly 14½" long and are made by me. I could not find a muffler that fit my location and moderatly low noise tone requiements. They are straight through and here's all they consist of (acoustic dampening fiberglass packing/insulation not shown in pic)..
http://www.deadbird.org/anews/du03.jpg

I cut, fit and welded all of the exhaust (and x-member) myself because I am (try to be anyways) a frugal person. I used 8- 90° bends and 2- 7' lengths of straigh pipe from JCWhitney. Overall (excluding headers), to make my duals, ran just under $150.

Hooker LT's, 3" pipes into 4" Y collector then back down to 3" Blowmaster exhaust. The y-pipe is dented in for extra clearance under the crossmember... I have not managed to scrape this exhaust on anything

I'll try to get a sound clip of my car tonight. I've attempted several times but even standing 30+ feet away my crappy digital cameras sound is too sensitive and gets distorted by the "drone" of the Blowmaster

headman hedders part number #68460
this is the best ehaust i have ever had performance wise ,i started out with a stock exhaust witch was a stock 3 inch setup then put a flowmaster, then added edelbroks hedders. then i went with these headman headers with a duel pipes into two dyno max muflers .then to my current setup with is the four inch. every thing incresed with this setup 1/4 mile times and big notice in gas mileage.

Here's my car with the most recent dual setup. I swapped to a T5 though, and couldn't get the header clearance I wanted near the bellhousing so I swapped out the hedman LT's for shorties. The dual setup wouldn't fit at all then, and I wasn't about to do a third dual exhaust setup. I have a 3" hooker cat back minus the cat now

yea wish they made them like that for the SBC would make it a lot easier to route the exhaust with the spohn torque arm.

Thanks

for the guys that have LT headers and a single pipe catback style exhaust, do you make a custom y pipe or does a company sell one that works on our cars??

mufflex makes a y-pipe to fit the sbc hooker headers, but for the hedmans, your on your own.
