Headman Long tube problem

Just found out the hard way the Headman long tube headers (pn 68460) might not work with a T5. Looks like the clutch fork thing (forgive me for my lack for T5 knowledge) is in the way and there does seem to be an easy way of getting around it. Are my only choices 1) sell LT's, and buy standard headers 2) Ditch T5 for automatic if i want to keep the long tubes?

Is it possible to relocate the clutch linkage?

Thanks

Good point Kevin. I have the Hooker SC LT headers. Not on the car yet.

Does anyone have either of these long tube headers (Hedman or Hooker) on their manual transmission cars??

Thanks!

Hey guys,

I tried the hedman long tubes with my T5 a while back (when I did an engine swap). It took grinding on the bellhousing where the slave cylinder mounts just to make it fit. And when the motor moved, the headers hit the body/frame of the car too. That is why I switched to shorty style. Interesting note: i told summit that my car had the manual transmission, and they were supposed to send the headers that would fit. Well, needless to say they sent the wrong ones. I made them fit all right, but decided the clearences were just too tight, so ordered the right ones. And yep, they charged me for the right ones and wouldn't take back the wrong ones. Can't speak for the hooker headers though. They might fit.

Good luck

Well, i think right now i could live with tight clearances. I knew going in that Headman stated on Jegs.com that floorboard 'modification' might be required. I checked the Headman webpage and it says these headers will not work with the T5 so, i am glad to hear that at least someone shoehorned a set in.

BTW the passenger side went in with no real major problems. I had to remove the starter, and I took out most of the air conditioning too. The A/C didn't work and was dead weight anyway. It went in from the top, but it looks like the fuel lines may need to be relocated a bit and wrapped in thermal tape to prtect them from the exhaust

Thanks

Yeah, my passenger side went together no problem (and the y-pipe from there could even run in the stock location). The driver's side gave me problems down by the slave cyl, like I said, and also by some part of the front subframe. I had to bend some brake lines back a little, but no big deal there. My fuel lines are on the driver's side of the car, and I never messed with them. Oh yeah, a/c on the driver's side too (had to modify a bracket). The other big problem I had with the long tubes is that the driver's side one dumped out too far back for a y-pipe to cross over to the passenger side without sitting real low. I scraped it on everything.

Well, i got the driver side in. I did what you recommended Mike and grinded the slave cylinder brakcet down some, and i clearanced the header to get it to fit. Hopefully i can finish up tomorrow all the little things (lines etc) and take it somewhere to get exhaust run.

i have the hedman 68460's on my 88 LO3. I had to have my neighbor take the driver's side to work and heat it up and bend it down slightly... probably 3/4" at the most. But now it fits perfectly. I had to weld a fitting for the oxygen sensor in the collector. Initially with the 700R4 I had it welded on top of the collector, but when i switched to the T5, I had to have it moved to the inside of the collector. I didn't have to grind the bellhousing or the bracket for the slave cylinder. If you're going to attempt to bend the headers yourself, clamp it in a vice and measure from the last bolt hole to the top of the collector and heat it and bend it 1-1/8" and if possible, very slightly to the outside, and it fits well. Incidentally, I have custom-bent 2.5" dual exhaust with Dynomax 3" Bullet Race mufflers (Loud as hell). The passenger side fit without a problem, although the #6 spark plug is hard to get to. Any questions, feel free to ask.
