Tip question... they affect sound and tone -that- much?

Ok, first... my set-up... I have what i believe to be a Mineke (sp?) stock replacement muffler... the tips are about 16-20 inches long (enough to extend to right underneath the bumper) however they are bent down and cut at an angle... This set-up is quite quiet for a thirdgen, and pretty quiet even for a V6... Recently my right pipe has come loose at it's joint to the muffler, and it's gotten louder... a nice grumble and has become noticeable in the car...

My question is this... what different kinds of tips affect the sound and tone in what way? What could I do to project the loudest sound outside the car? (aside from putting a coffee can on it...) Should I cut them, angle them down, leav them straight, make them long or short?

Any suggestions and answers are appreciated.

a friend of mine put a Dynomax cat back on his 2000 GMC pickup...the kit had dual 2 1/2 pipes on it (coming straight out under the bumper) and it sounded really loud and mean. I had an extra set of those Hooker chrome dual tips that I gave him...after bolting them on it COMPLETELY CHANGED the tone from the mean bad *** tone to a more nasally growl tipe of sound.

So, yes...the tips can make a HUGE difference.

Rarely do they do that..I mean, if you have the Borla ones or something, maybe, but why not just put a performance exhaust on? Even a V6 would benefit with a little more pep...

i have a theory which i will see if its correct or not tomorrow. If putting on dual 20"x3.5" tips over having 2.25" tips will improve the sound. i'll take pics!!!! and i'll try making an MP3 too..

My theory is that wider the muffler-back pipes are, the louder the tone is... however if you don't have enough airflow the sound will become rice-ish above 2500RPM if the tips are too short and/or wide...

Today I lost my one pipe on a highway going to my girlfriends, by the time I could turn around and get back there, the pipe had been run over several times, rendering it completely useless...

The sound from inside the car is a huge grumble, the side of the vehicle is the same, but behind it... it's not -that- much louder...

Yes, I know about performance muffler set-ups and such, as soon as I get some dough (and get my engine mods done), I'm going to get a Super Turbo muffler, and have someone bend and cut me new tips for it... My cat-to-the-muffler pipes are just fine, the same size as the Y-pipe conjunction pipe... going any bigger than that would be a useless waste of time and money... I'm going to order the dual out 2.5's...

Thanks for te insite... hope this post helps -someone- out...

ive got a quick question about my s-10 blazer. I just put a 50 series flowmaster on. 2.5 inch. i just have a pipe coming out like 16 inches behind the muffler. the pipe stops a few inches before the rear axle. It is actually kind of annoying loud in the car but it sounds great outside. If i had a shop make me pipe to the rear of the blazer will it be alot quieter inside but still sound really good outside. or will the longer pipe take some of the growl out of it.

Yes, the pipes comming out of the mufler, how they are angled, and how long they are do matter.

Example: I bought a flowmaster for my car, but i wanted a sertain sound out of it. I wanted to be loud outside and as quiet as a can get it inside. so what i did was i took to long pieces of straight pipe and cut them off 2 inches from the end of my bumper, so now it very loud outside but soft inside.

A down angl pipe will channel the sound downward so it will be softer then straight pipes.

If you want a loud interior sound cut off the pipes like 3 inches short of the bumper, in won't be very loud outside but it will rattle you inside.

Just thought this might answer your question.

I just changed my tips from the crappy chrome ones that come with the hooker cat back to some borla ones. The car sounds the exact same to me. I thought there might be a change because the outlet size went from 3" to around 2.5" (because of those pattented borla flange thingy's). Now a turn down tip might make a diff but I am not sure.

Ya, right now i have my 80 series, and i haven't finished putting on tips, so the exhaust exits about 16" before the bumper, loud in the car, not so loud outside, hopefuly it will change when i put on the new tips.

well I will say this. you ever hear any of the big semi's ( kenworth, peterbuilt, freightliner, Marmon ) some of them you can hear from a half mile away look up at their stacks. if you ahve a 45* bend, staight cut or angle cut will change the sound. Straight is by FAR the loudest. we have a fleet of 8 trucks two of wich are Kenworth t-600's with 600 catapilar engines in em. they are both the same year same set up everyting BUT one has straight pipes and one has a 45* bend and angle cut. there is such a differnce in sound youd think it has a 570 or maybe even the 400 cat instead of the big 600
