Edelbrock TES Headers question.

My headers should be here tomorrow and I read in another post that the black color they have is just an under coating thats why they burn off to that ugly brown/white shade. I was wondering if this is true and if so then would any high temp spray work? I cant coat them cause I dont have the cash. Im pretty sure that even with the high temp spray they are still going to turn bad though, right?

Also what kind of improvements should I see with these and my stock cat and cat-back? or should I just wait till get a 3"cat and cat back?

I think even the high temp spray won't hold, but it may take a bit of time for it to wear off. I'd say just stick them on there and just get some new coated headers when you get the money. SLP of course....but wait to get those after your 3" exhaust.

Yes it is true, i put my TES headers on a week and they are already a whitish color. After they are installed you will get a lot of white smoke coming off the headers, it is normal, it is just the paint burning off.

As far as the rest of the exhaust, wait and install everything at the same time. I just installed some TES, a 3" catco, and a aerochambered cat back but i have only been able to enjoy it for about a 30 min because i accidentally knocked out the wire to the fan switch during installation, my car overheated and melted a hose nipple on my heater control valve and i lost all my coolant. Gonna fix that today.
I did notice a very small lose in low end power which is very common but i did feel a lot more pull once i hit 2500-3000 RPM and the sound is great, and is a lot of fun to drive, cant wait to get it fixed.
You will also need a set of new plug wires, i used MSD Heli Core universals, so that you can route them around the VERY HOT headers, they worked great.
Just ask if you need any more questions

I put some 1200* black ceramic coat spray paint on the headers and it lasted about 2 weeks and now is starting to burn off. Summit does sell spray for up to 1500* so maybe I'll try that and see if it holds up.

Well I've had the Edelbrock TES headers on my 5.7 IROC for about 3-4 months now and for the first week they smell real bad with the paint burning off them(and a few plug wires in the process). After that they turn a white/grey/brown color. They sound decent but they're just too restrictive and a waste of money in my opinion. I learned the hard way. I'll be going with the hooker super competition L/T ceramic coated headers pretty soon. They may cost $650 but they have a lifetime warranty against rust and are arguably the best headers on the market right now.In my opinion edelbrock has nice intakes but their exhaust line needs some serious work..

Take some laquer thinner and wipe the black shipping paint off then spray with high temp stuff. Mine are still black after a year of use.

Yeah, I just wiped them off after all the paint had burned off, then they are a nice flat black color, they look really cool.

I also tried to put a high temp (1200+) spray on too. It started to crack soon after I started the car. It's been about 7 months now and parts of the paint is left but you can still see the white metal showing. The paint on the air tubes did stick tho.

I wouldn't waste my time or money on spray painting them again.

don't blame the headers for turning white when u morons don't coat them right! the coating that is on them is for shipping purposes only. you really should sandblast them and paint them with a good quality paint. mine look great after 2 years. do the job right and you will be pleased with the results.

Sorry for being a moron, but I'm sure it is hard to sandblast the headers while they're in the car, I didn't know before hand that the paint would wear off, so I just figured I would try some high temp paint and see what happens.
