Long-Tube headers?
Does anyone make Long-Tube headers for 3rd gen TPIs?

Strictly speaking, the answer is "no".
Because you said "for 3rd gen TPIs". Running long tubes into a y-pipe to get the gases to the convertor in the stock location (required for "TPI" EPA-legal exhaust) is a custom job.
So, yes, long tube headers are available; but, they aren't "bolt-ins".
Your SLP's are pretty good pieces. Long tubes wouldn't increase your performance enough to justify the cost & hassle.

Hooker makes long tube headers for thirdgen TPIs. Although they are made to 'fit' thirdgen V8s (including TPIs), they are not emissions compliant. Fitting TPI engines and being emissions compliant are 2 different things. Along with a mufflex Y-pipe the system is a bolt-in .... albeit a hard one.

Yep, but like Traxion said, it's a tough install. Here's my setup:

I have to dissagree about the lack of performance difference between long tubes and shorty headers. But, on a stock/near stock engine - it might not matter much. However, on a large cubic inch - or modded 350, I'm willing to bet that long tubes are worth 20-25 HP @ the flywheel compared to shorties - as long as they are both the same primary tube size.
I put 1&5/8 long tubes on my friends 95 GT, it went a best of 12.959 @ 105.84 w/ 1&5/8 equal length shorties. With nothing other than the BBK long tubes, it went 12.707 @ 107.1 I'd say that is a nice gain.

Most 12-sec cars are already "highly modified". A 2-tenths gain is indeed significant there, but even as you said, you're not likely to get that in a daily driven, emissions legal ride.

How much ground clearance do you have?

My ground clearance is a little less than before the Mufflex y-pipe. I have scraped it a bit on a sharp dip in a road going 50 mph. I have to be aware of this as I approach speed bumps and sharp inclines.
It's totally worth the extra performance and the sound is simply awesome. My 383 with this exhaust turns heads everywhere I go........one of the best mods I've done to date!
It's not for the 'mechanically disfunctional' sort nor is it for the 'emissions-minded' hot rodders!!

I don't understand why it's not legal to have long tubes, and 2 cats the same distance from the engine. I just don't get it.

Hey Phil,
I've seen your pictures, but since you did it maybe you could tell me.
Do you think there is room anywhere in that setup for a cat?
I thought maybe right after the y pipe in the driveshaft tunnel.
What do you think?

Fake: My muffler shop showed me some 'new' Random Technologies 'shorty' 3" CATs that could be mounted on the y-pipe on the two pipes after the collectors. They flow nicely. The mufflex y-pipe exits with a 4" pipe. I have never seen a 4" CAT. It would be restrictive to go down to a single 3" CAT then a muffler. I don't use or need them though so I have done little investigative work here..............
Brody: I installed my LT headers with the engine out too. Twice. You can't put them on the engine then drop the engine in, no way, at least not with these Hooker model 2210s. Not enough clearance on either side. I lowered the motor to just about 3" above the motor mounts then worked the headers on from underneath the car. The pass side is the toughest due to the starter and dipstick. You need to work the starter in as you position the pass header, it's tough. A small Hi-torque starter may solve this problem. I also recommend getting them coated due to high heat output and to get 'angled plug' heads. I have to make my spark plug (shorty) for cylinder #7. My AFRs are straight plugged. Only #7 plug is a problem. I also had to dimple the headers in two spots where they rubbed on the frame of the car on the pass side. I just did my pass side today. What a job! Bottom line, I DO NOT recommend LT headers for anyone who is impatience or can't wrench on a car very well or has annual smog inspections. The SLP 1-3/4s will work fine. This LT install is tough. This was my 12th header installation on over 10 different cars over 15 years time. I've learned to have patience!
BERL: As far as smog, I don't think Hooker offers the SC LT headers with AIR tubes. CATs can be installed though.........
Ray: Yep, y-pipe near tranny x-member.
Hope this helps gents................
