Thinking about side pipes, any comments?

Im thinking about getting sidepipes. This involves removing side ground effects. I was going to put corvette sidepipe covers over them, the paintable ones. Is my idea a waste of time or is it worth doing?

to be honest I think true side pipe would look funky on a thirdgen. Im working out a plan for site exiting tips right now. my plan is to notch the bottom of the gfx about 4 inches ahead of the back of them, and make a flat, almost rectangular tip for each side. I photoshopped my idea if you want to see what Im talking about.

nice side exit, what kind of tip is that ? Also, can u get a picture of how the pipes are setup underneith the car ? I've got headers coming in the mail, and im not sure how to set em up.. trying to think of how to do a good dual setup.

That looks like a NASCAR setup. Cool! What I was also thinking is if side exits could be done like some of the SCCA cars. It would require some sheet metal work and probably the removal of the rear seats, and interior trim. A circular hole could be cut right behind the door, just above the ground effects. You'd have to cut an opening in the floor, and then weld in a sheet metal box(or something similar) to protect the interior from the heat and fumes. The exhaust pipe could then be angled up through the opening in the floor and then through the hole on the side(behind the door, above the gfx). This setup would leave the ground effects untouched, help with ground clearance, and would allow less water in if driving in heavy rain. What do ya'll think?

It's probably too labor intensive and who knows if there's enough clearance underneath? If possible it's probably not worth the cost.

If it would look good to you go for it. Personally I think on a 3rd gen. it would look out of place or just plain stupid. I like sidepipes on old corvettes though so it's not that I don't like that exhaust setup

wow that side exaust is about 16" long, same as the rim. I had an idea to run a singe 3" pipe to a Y what would spit the dual 2.5" exaust out at a 90* angle. You would then put 4thgen z28 tips under the ground effects right in front of the rear tires. NO muffler but a cat if you have one and IF you do need a muffler get this one on the 3" I pipe

Dont newer mustangs come with sidepipes or something? i swear i saw one with sidepipes. I try not to know to much about mustangs...so im not sure if they came from the factory like that, but if they did maybe a brave soul could actually go up to the thing and inspect how that was done... (but im not doin it, i think they are infectious)

thanks for the comments, actually it is photoshopped but I was going for the NASCAR look. what I was thinking was using the Spintech oval tubing so that it wont interfere with ground clearance or anything, and then I would custom make the tips out of sheetmetal, and notch the very bottom of the gfx so that it sat right up into them. Im looking at the prices now, and as soon as the money appears Im going for it. h*ll, my dad and I swapped the lt1 in, I think we can probably handle the exhaust.

i have true duals on my 92 z. it exits right in front of the tires like you are talking about. i have slp 1 3/4 headers and 2 1/2 pipe ran down the outside of the frame on each side of the car. i used 2 chamber flows.ground clearance wasnt hurt that bad. but the worst part about doin it is all driver side shorty headers the collector angles towards the front of the car so that its hard to make the bend to make the pipe go towards the rear of the car on the driver side. you can see a pic of the exhaust when it was on my firebird here: http://hometown.aol.com/bigbadbird355

o yeah i forgot to say the ground effects hide most of the exhaust with only the tip sticking out right in front of the tire.

TexasLT1... if you were to do this setup, and it looks awesome... I feel bad for ya when you go to get out of the car and its running. You're gonna have the exhaust going right onto your legs!! Also.. if those shaved door handles are real and not photoshopped.. those look awesome too !
