87 5.7L IROC- What sounds best?
I'm going to be in the market for a new exhaust system soon, because my car sat for so long before I bought it. Just wondering what people thought would sound best on it. I want a good rumble at idle, but nothing that shakes the world or makes you deaf when you punch it. You still gotta have some element of surprise. The cat-back on it now is original stock.
Also, would I be better off to go with dual exhaust? I don't have any major mods (yet), and I have heard that these engines rely partially on backpressure. Would it hurt my performance?
Thanks
-Joey

Low mileage 5.7L 87 IROC-$3000. Black is beautiful-$2000. Faster is better- $1500. Smeared Mustang-priceless.

Man, I've got one word: FLOWMASTER. That's what I purchased and everyone I've talked to has been very happy with them. I prefer dual exhuast but you might want to think different if you want to keep very quiet. My vote goes for duals w/flowmasters. I'd also get rid of the cats- power robber!!

Get yourself the Hooker cat-back, sounds awesome there is a soundclip of it on this board. Plus looks great with the dual exit tips. Also I definately noticed more power after the install. I wouldn't waste my money on dual exhaust with a near stock motor, besides you would have to end up getting 2 1/4 piping for duals because of the HP of your motor. Don't worry about deleting the cat, a hi-flo one won't rob you of any significant power.

Why does everyone run flowmasters? Yeah they're loud, but I think they sound terrible. I like the borla system myself, but if you don't want to spend the money get a Hooker system, real nice idle sound and great WOT!
Cause Flowmasters turn heads, and I dont wanna have to floor it to hear the exhaust. I like to make the dumbasses in the Mustangs look puny

Well, I think I have made my choice. My father-in-law has a Series 80 Flowmaster muffler that he took of a 6 banger car and is going to give to me. It doesn't have many miles on it. Do you think it would be alright to just put it on my car with it being used and all?

A used one would be fine, just make sure it is ok by looking at it. Yeah guys I know, Flowmasters are great. Just one thing, no matter what you put on your third gen, its better than those beer can, fart exhausts that the rice burners have, egh?

I'm guessing since you say no cats, that you put the mufflers under the front floor pans. I don't want my car to smell, though. I have a shelby cobra replica that is just awesome, but without cats, it does stink. That's fine for that car, but for my daily driver, I don't want to have to smell exhaust all the time.
my vote definetely goes to the flowmaster 80 series.i have the puny junk a$$ 305 with only a catco and 2.25 exhaust, but it sounds just about the same as irocthe5.7's car does
,just not as deep.and if you can get a used one then you are in for even more of a treat
.flowmasters have a tendency towards sounding better as they age.i can vouch for that one myself.go for it man!
