Why do you need duals?

Find an exhast shop and have them make the pipes and throw a couple of mufflers right in front of the axle, and dump them right there, no tail pipes.

just run the pipes straight on back.

Maybe it is just my car, 88 IROC-Z like in the name, but I was told true duals were impossible by 4 different exhaust shops. I wanted that true dual sound but it just wouldnt work. Maybe it is just the little bit new camaro's and yours would work. I had to go all the way to the back axle and split it there.

It is NOT impossible. MANY have done it. I dont know what it is with these thirdgen people they have to say it cant be done. I plan on doing it soon, when i do pictures will follow.

Won't that be loud as hell? I had a '71 Chevelle set up like that and even when I was 20 yrs old I could only take it for about a week. Then I had tail pipes put on.

To each his own, I guess.

Its doable. Most people don't do it well though. Better off with a real catback system.

duals on thirdgens are very doable. i try to tell everyone- just have your exhaust shop run side-by-side pipesand route them through the stock location. the only place where any true difficulty occurs is when the pipes go over the rear axle. the fit is tight, but manageable. next come the mufflers, and the pipes can exit at opposite sides, just as they do stock. believe me, it won't sound stock, though. done right with the right mufflers, it'll sound better than any cat-back i've ever heard, or owned.
i would discourage getting glasspacks- mine was too loud 'til i had the packs removed

Well, I just put headman headers on my '84. It also has a 305. It took about 10 hours with my father-in-law and I both working on the car. We had to remove the starter, move the alternator, remove the a/c compressor (did not have to disconnect it, fortunatly, we just laid it on top of the engine) and had to jack the engine up about a foot to get enough clearance on the sides to slip the headers in. We also had to cut the bracket that holds the ac compressor so that it would fit over the header tube.
