loudest exhaust
loudest exhaust
i already have a borla exhaust on my 86 rs, but i want it to be louder. my friend suggested a cut-out, but i was just going to buy a new one all together. i just want my car to be as loud as possible and sound good. what exhaust system should i get? or should i just go with the cut out?
I wasn't aware they built an RS in '86, Thought that they were brought back in '88. Anyway, the loudest possible exaust system so to speak, would be this: To start, either a hollow cat, or the cat fully removed and a piece of 3" straight pipe welded in it's place. Then, a mandrel bent intermediate pipe either 2 3/4 or 3", routed back to a 2 chambered flowmaster muffler with only one outlet. Then a single 3" exaustpipe out the back off the flowmaster. A friend of mine has this on his '87 fomula 305, and it is very loud. remember, one pipe is always louder than two since all the sound is concentrated out of one large diameter exaust pipe. Plus they dont make a stock replacement flowmaster in two chamber, only three chamber and it is a quieter design and also has dual exaust outlets. Since I personally prefer duals though, I have the three chamber muffler. Finally, headers and high flow Y-pipe would really set it off for you.

I must be getting old. I don't equate "as loud as possible" with "sounds good". Did I miss a memo?
I'd prefer "quiet as possible" coupled with "best performance possible". I would be quite happy if the '57 was as quiet as the Camaro if it ran as good as it does now.
"Loud as possible" just creates enemies. I don't know about you, but just being the owner of those two cars is enough to get me enemies without trying any harder at it. And I hardly ever drive the '57 through the neighborhood at midnight anymore (unless eliminations have gone long).

I like loud... I can't explain it... but I like to hear what the engine is doing. I think the loudest set-up is a cut-out after the Y. This also alows you to retain a quite system for "stealth mode".

The only possible downside is the 2000rpm drone, which is a bigger problem on the A4 cars than it would be with a T56 car, since you can shift around it...that 6th gear comes in handy!

if u have the original muffler on it, just take it off, and put an acetylene torch down the inflow chamber, it will burn the rest of the packing right out, then u have loud exhaust, and if u get stopped for it, then u can say, hey pig, i have a muffler see...that tip came from my uncle, we restore muscle cars and he knows his **** lol
