cutout locations? where to put it?

i am wanting to get an electic cutout and i was wondering where i should put it on my exhaust? is it legal? and would it be ok to just put it on my exhaust some place and now run another pipe from it? like when it opens the exhaust will come out right there? and how loud is it? will it hurt my ears? i know i am going to put the switch to it in the ashtray just because thats awsome. will it sound like open headers? thanks

I have both of my cat's cutoff....sooo..it didn't matter for me.....not sure if it's legal....mine is installed in the "I" pipe, almost directly beneath the back passenger seat.....some people place them before the cats too....emmision laws aren't enforced around here in Indiana....it's VERY loud....it doesn't really hurt my ears....but...the interior resonance is unbelievable and it's about impossible to carry on a conversation....I've had my stereo on 20 and my exhaust overpowered it. I'm running headers.....when I open the cutout....it sounds MUCH better then when I was running manifolds. The cut-out has a "raw" very very loud sound to it....sounds like a NASCAR coming down the road. If you like it loud by the flip of a switch.....get an electronic cut-out....the best of both worlds for me

i love the sound from a distance but i have never been inside a car with a cutout. i have headers and a y-pipe and then stock 305 exhaust thats killin my 350. i am going to do some head work and get that all good and flowing good and so i figured a cutout would be the best way to go. also mr gasket makes one that you just pull a cord thing like a choke and it opens it up and its only 50 bucks! i might go with that. i will probably put it pretty far back just because i dont want it to be insanely loud and i will probably put a turn down on it. do you think its possible to just cut out a piece of my i-pipe and put the cut-out in and clamp it down or will i have to weld it? i dont have acess to a welder so i would have to have a muffler shop do it for me and that usually costs quite a bit. and if its not legal i will have to search for some mom and pop place to do it.

It's illegal, if you are allowed to run cars with no mufflers...then your safe.

Most shops will put it on anyways, tell them you will pay in cash. Cash talks!

yeah but i would rather install it myself for free than to pay 50 for the cutout and then 50 or more for the instalation. i had my cat removed and a pipe welded in at a muffler shop. they also put on a new muffler and some cool tips that i bought at auto zone and they charged me about 250 for the instalation and cutting out the y-pipe

dont mean to be a jerk but you got ripped badly $250 thats alot to install a muffler and you could of taken out the cat your self and bought a pipe for like 20 bucks and clamp it in place and did you buy a whole exhaust system or just a muffler because at a local garage shop they only charged me $36 bucks to install my flowmaster and weld it in and it only took about 45 min's.

yeah, this was a little diff though, my y-pipe was the same size as my cat and then the i pipe was stock and it had to be modified to get a pipe on there and it had to be bent and stuff because my y stuck too far out and then he had to weld it and the muffler was used so it had to be specially done because it couldnt just be clamped or anything and my tips i bought were way too big for my tail pipes so they also had to be modified. took him about a day and a half to do so i didnt think it was too bad

the only place around me was meineke and they wouldnt take off my cat and they said anywhere from 100-150 to replace my muffler and put on the tips and i had to buy a diff cat and it had to be modified to fir over the y and then into the i-pipe so i figured this place is closer and id be payin the same amount anyway. before my cat wouldnt fit on right, my i-pipe drug the ground half the time adn it pushed against the shaft so when i took off too hard it would ping really bad. he also had to fab up some brackets for it to fit onto. i really wish i had a welder and knew how to do it. i could save a crap load of cash
