my exhaust hanger broke, and i was curious anyway, so i yanked the cat back off my car....

with just the cat, it sounds kinda like a SLP loudmouth.. but i attribute that to the fact that between the small manifolds, tiny Ypipe and cat, it muffles alot of the sound..

in anycase, expect to see no performance improvement.

If you don't want it on there, you have to go with a perfermance exhaust. I have a 91 L03 Firebird and changed the stock muffler to the flowmaster series 80. Definite improvement! I've filled my gas tank up 6 times since then, and I've seen an extra 40 miles to the tank at least. So instead of hitting 230 miles a tank, I'm well over 275 miles (hit 284 just today). Oh and it scares the hell out of people when I coast in on them walking and then mash it right next to them, hehe. Nice rumble at idle and beautiful muscle sound as it revs. Of course, it's nice and loud with my headers and hollowed cat as well.

I just tried to do this today to my 85 TA It has a 350 bored .040 over and it does not sound very much louder than with the muffler. A whole lot deeper but not overly loud. Of course the muffler was rotten anyway. The only problem was that after being on for 18 years the pipes would not come apart and i had to cut it near the connection and it is not round so now I have to figure out how to connect some pipe to it because i dont think its a good idea for the exhaust to exit underneath the gas tank. I like the sound of it now to get it to exit at the back of the car. Get a pipe cutter that can handle 2 inch pipe and cut it as close to the muffler as you can.

Dont get me wrong it was louder but not something that would get you in trouble with the law. Dont know if it runs any better havent driven it anywhere yet had to work all day I will work on getting the exhaust pipes connected tomorrow. I dont want it exiting under the gas tank because of possible heat/fire problems and the heat and exhaust gas could cause the tank to rust?? It just bothers me there.

I did notice one big thing about it. The smell from the exhaust is very very strong when I start the car. I did not notice this when I had the muffler on. Maybe someone can explain this to me.

I dont think you are gonna be able to take the muffler off by removing the clamp and sliding the exhaust out of the muffler. It is probably rusted to it and it will take some major work like heating it up and beating on it and doing that over and over again. I couldnt even get the clamp off it was rusted and even after I sprayed the clamp with rust eater and let it sit. I started to loosen the nuts on it and the just spun on the threads so I had to cut it off.

Maybe someone else will have an idea on how to get it off without cutting it. I dont know and I didnt want to get under there by the gas tank with a propane torch to heat it up. Im a nervous guy what can i say.
good luck with getting your muffler off.

Well it does not sound ******* to me. What sounds ******* to me is someone with a flowmaster on because that is what every ******* has on their truck around here. I like the sound its just smooth and deep. Keep in mind my motor is a new 350 with only about 500 miles on it and I still have the catalytic converter on which I think is clogged so your results may vary. Go to auto zone and see how much a stock muffler would be then figure about 50-75 for a muffler shop to install it with new tailpipes out the back. If you dont like the sound you could always do that or just get a flow or something put on. If you can get it off without cutting it then it will be easy to put back on if you want. If you cant then you will have to figure some other way to get your old muffler back on or put a new one on.

I got the pipe going out the back with the turndown. Really I dont think it is loud. Out of 100 other cars on the road I would say my car would rate around 50. A flowmaster is louder than the stock exhaust without the muffler. It is deep and you can feel it more than hear it. Im taking the cat off this weekend its pretty clogged up so it may make it quite a bit louder.
I spent about 20 dollars on pipe, clamps, and hangers. I would say it is pretty good.
If you do it and its loud they make small pieces of pipe so even if you have to cut it you could splice it back together.
If you got pulled over tell the cop that your muffler got ripped of by you backing up over something. Tell them you didnt have the money to get another one put on say it was over 100 dollars and you just got a couple pieces of pipe to get you over until the next payday. That should keep you from getting a ticket but i seriously doubt that it could be that loud. I know mine is not anywhere near it and like I said I have a 350 in place of the 305 the rest of the exhaust is stock. It does not pop or cackle or anything like that and you can hardly hear it when you are going over 30 unless you punch it.

In the end I would say it is worth doing if you want. It lets the exhaust flow out a little better you may get 1-3 hp gain from it and it sounds a little better. I dont think you will get a ticket but as always your mileage may vary It all boils down to what you want to do.
Good luck with whatever you chose to do. Let us know what happens.
Oh I did get some exhaust leaks around the clamps where the pipes meet but I will put some of that muffler tape around the joints so that will be a 3 dollar fix.
Later,
WesDog
