SLP header bolts

Did any of you guys with SLP headers have problems getting all of the bolts tightented, I've got three that I can get screwed in but because of the flange I cant get a tool around them, ideas? Also I have leaks from the collectors where they mate to the y-pipe, again ideas? Thanks.

Here's what I did. I took a box wrench and ground down around the outside of it. Then I could tighten the last few loose ones.

Make sure your Y-pipe is lined up with the collectors as well as you can get them, and tighten it enough to crush the doughnut gasket all the way around. That's all I did.

Hey there Brian...

My SLPs still leak at the moment too, but I just got the Borla today so it looks like I'll be ripping the whole system out to reinstall the headers and the exhaust at the same time.

I had problems getting mine started also. Just dont tighten one down before you have the others in and also tighten them down evenly. I used gasgets from napa and I have had no leaks. I was able to tighten a couple of the bolts alittle more after a week but they havnt moved since then.

I got the install kit from slp but they didnt come with gasgets was is supose too?

It's like a reunion from the GP :lala: ..... lol.

I used Felpro 1404 header gaskets, some generic brand small hex-headed header bolts, generic grade 8 collector bolts, and some generic donuts from Checker that fit the collectors..... Buying through my other sources saved me some decent $$$$$ over the SLP kit... Plus I plain won't run anything but the 1404 or 1406 Felpros for header gaskets. Been there and back with mine and friends' cars and they have proven themselves many, many times over .

Anyways, I had a problem with mine when I first got them too. The driver side header had a warped flange for #3 and #5 and flat-out would NOT seal. No way, no how.... In fact I tried so hard I ended up having to helicoil those bolt holes . Ooops. Well I sent it back as they said they would not do anything warranty-wise until they saw the header and passed judgement on its condition. Well they took one look at it and sent me a new header and all was well with that one. I did have to do some argueing to get them to cover shipping though..... typical SLP there.

I have an extensive set of Snap On tools from when I was a tech and I don't really have a problem getting the 7/16" combination wrench onto the bolts I use. I run the box end as long as possible and then even use the open end a little where necessary. I also can get the 1/4 drive socket on some of them. I think the precision of how the tool is built will be a factor here.

As for the Y-pipe, I did what others said with respect to tightening it down slowly and evenly until the donut crushes all the way around.

No leaks for me

Hey Ed,
I guess I have been fortunate with my SLPs - I haven't had the first leak, except for when the pass-side Y-pipe bolts backed out a few turns. Of course I had to be 400 miles from home when it happened, at least I had the right tools. That was a couple of months after installing them. Since then, no problems.
