Is it Illegal to put cutout in front of CAts?

They guy at the Meineke muffler shop in Katy, TExas, Mason Rd. told me it was. Now really, why would you put a cutout after the cats? Anyway he says its illegal and he could go to jail and he doesn't like jail, hahah that funny right? The only cutouts Ive seen are before the cats to eliminate the back pressure of cats when you go to the strip. YOu know off road, etc.

What do you guys know about this? IS he right or full of $hit?

I dunno, but I think as long as the cutout is closed it is legal.

In California, it's illegal to change or alter anything in front of the catalytic converter unless the part has an Executive Order number issued for that particular part such as some headers.

You definitely should put it before the cat. Just don't run it open, and you'll be fine.

techniclly, its illegal.

therefore, nasi states (cali) might complain about it.

muffler shops cant do that kind of stuff.. they can be fined heavily, or even closed for that.... so most wont risk it.

now speed shops are a diff story.. they will make you anything you want... and it costs more.... and you usually have to sign somthing saying its not driven on the street... that covers their ***.... *shrug*

its all BS anyway IMO.

then again, thats why i register my car with my parents in South Carolina.

no emmissions
no inspections
no front tag.

I took mine to a auto welding place and they did it no problem. The guy had to move the cat back a little cause I have the stock single cat setup which sucks. I called around before and places like Midas wanted papers that said I race my car offroad. I get that old musclecar sound with it open now.

They won't put in test pipes here in WV...if a car comes in with a cat it leaves with one. Just bring it in open headers and they dont say a damn thing. I've done that 3 times so far.

Inspection stations don't say anything about mine (before cat). I live in Massachusetts, probably 2nd worse in the US behind California.

What is this mysterious piece that you call a cat?
Take off the cat and when they weld up the pipe have them weld the cutout in there too.

I don't think I've ever stated this.. but Texas is the best place for these types of things.... Inspection stations don't care about anything that has to do with emissions (unless you live in big cities). Cops don't care b/c all the cars\trucks in Texas are all loud so they're already deaf...

I feel for you guys in Cali... It must suck not being able to have any type of fun stuff on the car...

Well, I live in Houston, which obviously is a big city. If I can't put these in front of the cats Im just going to sell them and I'll have to buy new cats ($300). Oh well, its only money

Larry, call "MTI" Motorsport Technologies Inc. (which isn't too far from where you live). They put cut-outs on 4th gen's all the time! If they wont do it because it's a thirdgen (they usually only work on 4thgens and Corvettes only), then let me know. I'll hook you up with somebody.

Called the MTI guy and he said they only work on 98 and newer. Let me know if you know someone else. I still havent put on these headers because Im not sure what to do with the cats. Id like to put the cutouts and leave the old cats cause I cant' afford new cats right now. Heck it might be better inthe long run to just get new cats and weld it up, then sell these cutouts, They are brand new.
