What causes that lopey sound?
I know it's the cam, but what's actually happening in an engine that makes the specific sound?
Just curious.
Thanks.

usually it's valve overlap....when both the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time....it has to do with longer duration camshafts...
typically you give up idle quality and low rpm quality for the engine to make power more efficiently somewhere else in the RPM band...ie....usually higher up.

this guy i used to work with at pepboys has a 1990 or 91 eagel (sp) talon tsi awd and he's pushin about 500+ hp and the cams he has in it , it lopes like a ****, im sorry to say but it actually sounds good for a 4 banger but he's also pushin like 25-30 lbs of boost on pump gas and about 42-44 lbs on race gas.

And yea, its overlap that causes that sound, but solid lifters add a nice sound to that lope too

the 1500hp blown alcohol big block in our race truck has about 25lbs at maximum boost, granted its waaaaay more volume...just to put things in perspective though
