tes header dimensions
Hi,
I have aTA85 lg4. Want to use Edelbrock tes headers 6871. Later on however(Im on a small budget) I want to waste the 2 1/4 cat and hook up a 3" cat-back. Is the Y-pipe of 7871 also 2 1/4" or is it just a short length where it meets the cat, so that I can cut it?
thanks

I assume the "7871" is a typo.
Stay away from any exhaust made to fit LG4 factory components. Period.
Get '86-'90 TPI single cat application parts. If you continue to use some factory LG4 parts until future upgrades allow, modify the LG4 parts, not the stuff you've bought for the '86-'90 TPI single cat application.
The best approach is to replace everything at one time. The next best is to replace the cat at the same time you do the headers.

Then you are stuck with low performance parts. I wouldn't buy garbage just so you can have the heat stove. If you just have to have the heatstove hose why don't you just weld a heat stove pipe onto the headers, like the stock setup.

The difference between the tpi and the lg4 versions are the heatstove and the Y-pipe. Im trying to get someone to sell me the 6871 headers but to swap the Y-pipe for the tpi version. How important is it to have the heatstove? Im only driving the car from spring til early autumn

I have the flexible thermovac hose from the snorkel pointed between the #3 & #5 primaries. It works just fine without a "stove". The LG4 TES also require using the EFE valve, which is a nice restriction in the system.
You'd be better off with the non-LG4 type headers.

Ok, from what Ive learned from You guys Ill get either Hooker 2055s for tpi or TES for tpi. Here comes a really silly question: which ones are the 3 and 5 primaries? Do I need to make fast the hose in some way?

The 3rd is the second one back on the drivers side and the 5th is the third back on the drivers side. You should really need the heatstove, especially if you don't drive it in under freezing conditions. Both those headers are good. However it is generally believed that the hookers flow a little better.
