Hooker cat-back question

Hi everyone, i was wondering about the Hooker cat-back systems that i saw on the Jegs(www.jegs.com) website for our cars. I saw a system for 1983-92 non H.O. 305 Engine code H and E Part #520-16820 for $262.99. I then saw a 1983-85 for engine codes G, F, and 7 Part #520-16822 for $207.99. Now my question is, can I use the system for $207.99 on my 86 trans am with the engine code "H"??? Is it worth getting the less exspensive one and maybe doing a little pipe fabbing if I have to? I was just wondering because I wanted to get it but wasn't sure if I could just get the cheaper one and be in the clear?

Any input is appreciated,
Tony

The difference is in the way they attach to your cat. The more expensive system has a 3" to 2.25" reducer so that you can attach the cat back to the stock cat. If you want a tru bolt on and are not changing headers or your cat at this time I would get the system that matches your engine code. That way you can be sure that it will bolt right up without any fab work.

hey shifty...I decided that I am gonna get the hooker system...everyone talked me out of the borla one. But I got new hooker 2055s with Y pipe and a new 3in universal carsound cat(Thus no flanges). My car is an 84 H.O., Engine code G. So I know that I need the cheaper one, but is it flanged? Do you know if you have an option when ordering?

Since you are going with a complete 3" set-up I would buy the kit that is tailored to the 350 TPI cars. That way it should have a 3" collector to attach to your cat. There will be some fab work if it has a flange and your cat is a slip fit. No biggy though and any exhaust shop can do it for you. I had the flange cut off of mine because my 3" cat was a slip fit.

I bought the Hooker for the TPI car and it had 3 inch all the way and the part that goes to the cat wasn't tapered down to 2.x inch, it was 3 all the way. The cat part flared out like the openings on the Hooker y-pipe that go to the headers. If you can weld get the cheaper one then cut your flange off your stock and weld it to the 3 inch hooker pipe. Otherwise the pipe bends are identical, I am not sure about the hangars though, but like I said if you can weld no probs. I made the mistake of getting the 267 one and I have no cat, just a 3 inch straight pipe and summit cutout and ended up cutting and welding anyway, damn it, I should have got the 207 one, oh well.

What part number is it for the 350 TPI cars?

The only ones they have listed in the JEGS catalog are...

16820..F-Body 305 83-92 (H/E) $265.99
16822..F-Body 305 HO 83-85 $207.99
16823..F-Body 305 TPI 86-92 $262.99

Also, what is the H/E thing?

The last one is for the TPI cars including the 305 and 350 version. The H and E are two different engines codes. They are 305 models that were not HO models. Meaning that those cars have a 2.25" cat so there will be an appropriate flange on that cat-back.

So then the only difference between
16822..F-Body 305 HO 83-85 $207.99
&
16823..F-Body 305 TPI 86-92 $262.99
is that the TPI one does not have a reducer for the cat; it is just completely 3in? Then all I would have to do is cut the flange?
