It could be that your air intake on the TBI was better and taking in more air.

It could be your TPI is running more efficiently.

I suppose it's more likely if there was something not quite right about the TBI. I recall a while back (okay, quite a while back) when the points came loose on the 283. While it still ran, it was louder. It got really loud just before it stopped running...

Could also be the reported loudness is a matter of poor memory.

Okay, I give up...

could just be the exhaust is more restrictive to the new motor than the old. More restriction, less noise.

did you check your muffler to see if some animal got stuck up in there, i would assume it would be more restrictive also... and may even muffle the sound coming from the exhaust manifolds

Maybe we should take the muffler off my car too?

To be on topic. We pulled the 2.8L out of the 'bird and put in a 305 and I couldn't tell the diff. listening to the exhaust. So I think you should try a diffrent exhaust for your engine.

Its probably just the TPI talking (or "not")... its a more efficient induction system than TBI is, so it will be a little quieter.

I share the same opinion, combustion energy coming out of the exhaust port as noise can be wasted energy. My warmed over 283 is obnoxiously loud, but efficient? Hardly.

Cam size, heads and some other things can be a determining factor in exhaust tone and loudness also.

ok, good point. Stock 305 TBI- Inverted lobe camshaft, Slurpee straws for head ports, and an intake manifold housing little mice that run the motor.

new motor with a real cam, real heads, and an intake better than the afore mentioned (but not quite real...) and 50 xtra cubic inches....

which one SHOULD be louder? I mean the new motor even IDLES higher... and during WOT the 305 had a distinctive Flowmaster "roar" (more like squeek but ok...) tone, this motor has the same "tone" but its 3X as quiet!!!

Now im not complaining by any means... I have had 2 people yell "sleeper!" at me already just by lunching them around town with this quiet little beast... im just curious why its so quiet!

You've probably heard of people who like that "60's muscle car sound". What most don't realize is that "sound" was produced by fairly mild motor combos. When those cars were modified to really run, that sound was replaced with something that didn't "sound" nearly as mean - unless you knew what really made a car fast.

Couple of evenings ago I was in my front yard when a neighbor down the street drove in their driveway with their modified LS1 Vette. I heard it before I could see what it was, and it sounded like a V6 ricebomb coming up the street. As it idled in the driveway while he opened the garage door, and then rev'd to pull in (the driveway is on an up slope), there was no doubt what it was. Of course, that Vette would run circles around most of our 3rd gens. But, it doesn't have that "60's muscle car sound" at all (my Camaro has more of that sound than that Vette does).

Very interesting. I also noted that this motor with true duals and flowtech's "raptors" made it loud, but not roar loud, it sounded more like a high revving mopar than a TPI 355 chevy. most defintelly not what i would have expected
