Making the Exhaust Loud

Ok guys, i'mm tired of my exhaust sounding wimpy. I want something monster.

I got edlebrock headers, 3" y-pipe goin in this weekend.

I am planning on removing the cat, but since i'm on a budget, gonna take some steel rod and poke everything out of my cat. Will it just fall out or will i have to cut it open?

Will then toughen up my tone guys?

I took a big drill to mine, and broke it apart. I then turned it upside down and it came out.

If you want it to sound like a monster, run with an open ypipe for a while

well i want to keep my cat back in the priocess, i have just recently learned that the cat softens the sound more then the muffler does. Which is a pretty cool fact. Cant wait until mine is gone.

You can. I am running an open y pipe, while my catback is held up by a coat hanger My cat should be finished tonight

you should search for some sound clips of cars with and without cats before you make your decision. some people like the sound with no cat, but personally i HATE the sound....sound raspy and crappy to me (at higher rpm's)

check out http://exhaustsoundclips.com/gm.html . scroll down to the 350 section and compare some w/ cats to some w/o cats....you don't want to have straight pipe welded in place of your cat or something, only to realize you don't like the sound and have to hack the exhaust up to stick a converter back in. (if you decide you don't like the tone w/o cats, you can get hi-flow cats on ebay for like $32, not bad)

nah the cats are being remvoed, no doubt, that rasp is worth it.

I am simply gonna take the ummmm cat and stick somehting in it to amke the comb come out, it'll still soften the sound a bit but i think it will be worth it. then later i can get a high flow cat and it will still be loud.

if you're set on havin no cat, i'd ditch the cat and run straight pipe in place of it. if you have visual inspection where you are, i'd knock out the inside crap and run pipe through the middle. having the exhaust flow into that empty chamber, the air will get turbulent and impede the flow, but straight pipe would keep it goin good

If you don't get all of the little bits of cat out before you start it up, it will sound like **** rattling around inside your exhaust.

I speak from experience here.

The reason they can "make" Shane sponsor them, is because he is advertising on their site. If TGO makes the other companies advertising on the site (ASC, Hawks, ASCD, etc.), they can't let Shane advertise without charging him also.

I think the post about the taillights was allowed at first, because he was just gauging an interest in the product. Now that he knows that there are people out there willing to pay for his service, it's now considered advertising, not interest-gauging, and TGO doesn't allow free advertising.

well, when i read his taillight post, it was sure sounding like it was non profit. i mean i don't know how they look at that kind of stuff, but i have seen other people actually advertise and not hear anything about them having to pay. i can understand a temp ban. maybe a few days or a week.

Yes, it's not that we want him to sponsor. It's that if others are paying, letting someone make a business/money on here for free is not fair to them at all and can't happen.

NOW, back to the topic.

making your exhaust loud or quite is just as simple as muffler selection. ditch the cat if you can. if you like the sound of an exhuast with the cat you probably picked the wrong muffler as cats themselves usually sound like crap. you can kind of tune the sound with cat but they cost $$$ and don't last forever. I guess if you pick an exhaust that is too loud you can remedy that by putting a cat on. I would just listen to sound clips of cars with no cats and pick a muffler you like and then throw it on. I tend to like borla and bassani quite a bit. flowmasters are flowmasters. they sound okay but there are better flowing better sounding stuff out there IMO. get a borla xr-1 muffler if you want a good sound and it will pretty much last forever. then again exhaust is all personal preference.

well my headers are on and my cat is gone and i love the tone, but for somereason my video recording device, the thing that tkaes the movie from my camera to the computer speeds up the video way to much so it wont work right.
