how do I remove my smog equipment

I live in a state with no emissions testing and was thinking about removing all of me emissions equipment. What is the best way to do this and will I see any significant gains in horsepower or torque?

You won't gain anything but more space really. The only 'emitions' part that will make more power when taken off is a factory cat.

I would hold onto it if you do remove it. There has been talk of TN possibly going to a satewide test instead of just the major metro area's. Oh and your area is growing really fast so you never know.

There were a lot of guys here in California, just before smog inspections were introduced, that made substantial mods to their car, and removed whatever existing smog control devices were in place.

You could always tell which car owner had done that. Come inspection time, the car was for sale with expired registration. They couldn't pass smog to save their life, so they were going to pass the problem on to someone else.

Unfortunately, it is the current owner's obligation to get the vehicle smogged during a resale, and an invitation to get sued by the subsequent owner when they can't get it to pass smog.

Removing those emissions control devices is a violation of federal law. And, while you may not have inspections now, assuming you will never have inspections may be a mistake.

Do you gain any noticable Horsepower or torque by removing the smog setup?

Then why do so many people remove it?

If I had to guess, I'd say most of them do it for the same reasons you were about to

So basically everyone is doing it because they think that they will gain a few hp and some torque.

That and its often easier and cheaper to just remove one of the components when something in it breaks, rather than replace the component. Thats the only reason I took mine out.

remove it because

I removed it on mine because:

- The year and make of car in my area does not have to have it

- It adds more weight, weight takes away power

- It is ugly!!

- It is dirty !

- It gets in the way

- One less system to maintain
