anyone have BIG headers
i have a 91 firebird with a 383 as of now it has 1-5/8 shorties with a custom y-pipe into 3" exhaust . for my 355 it served great but i believe this is a huge cork in my performance. Brent Frasier (local engine builder and most of all John Gullets crew chief ) told me to try 1-7/8 primaries well i want a bigger motor down the road so im looking at 2" primary headers as well does anyone on here have a set of either if so who made them, how big of a pain was it (not that i care ill pull the motor if i have too) and how do they seem to perform. thanks in advance

not only does no one make them that big, but the exaust bolt pattern would interfere with the tubes.. so you need a adapter plate that uses flush mount bolts to mount to the head, and the plate has a larger bolt pattern for the header.
very pricy stuff.

yeah ive used those style on a 408ci mustang were a pain at first but they were worth it because the car runs hard now but i havent found many companies other than stahl that make such headers for third gens and like you said they are expensive

after that, you're looking at custom headers.

i coulda sworn hedman made 1 7/8" sbc headers that where off the shelf, you need the adapters, and have to relocate your oil filter and run a mini starter. but i thought you could buy them through jegs or summit. need the part/number, you can get that from hedman's site.

Lemon Headers

Stahl Headers

If you decide that you are going to get/build a SBC that needs 2" primaries then to be honest you shouldn't be asking how big a pain it will be to fit them. It will be a major pain and will probably involve several of the pipes running through the inner fenders.
If you're considering getting a 1100bhp engine from Brent Frasier, then why not just get him to sort out the headers for you at the same time.
Hope the links help you out!
Heres a pic of one of the type of headers you can get from Stahl for thirdgens with SBC's.
They do various types of headers from 1 5/8 to 1 3/4 step all the way up to 2" primaries. Just plan on tubes number 7 and 8 going through the fenderwells.

I wouldn't get any headers going out the wheel wells. Ihave 2 1/8inch headers on my chevelle and it gets in the way when u make a sharp turn because your tires start to get hot.

Hooker 2322...extremely hard to find but if you can, they are worth it. 1 7/8 primaries and they stay inside the fenderwells.

i run a set of these, great header and there was a little bit of trimming required around the a-arm lips to get them in there, nothing a angle grinder didnt handle. they had 3 inch collectors and were really great

I have a set going on my race car. Do you have any pics of them installed? I would like to see. I think they are 3.5" collectors, are they not?

These are the Heddman Hustlers my buddy is running on his ATI SC 421cid. 1 7/8" pri 3.5" collectors, no need for oil relocater either with these if you use the short filter.
I wanna say these come in 2" primaries also? been awhile since he put them on and we talked about them. Either way I dont envy his plug changes with the charger on there LOL!! but he's running 9's already and has'nt done anything but played with jets/bigger needle seats so he's looking to be low 9's when it's all said and done. Currently working on his brakes LOL- stock stuff is a little weak when going that fast with a short shut down

I am in the same boat as all you guys. I have victor junior heads, with large ports. I would like to run 1 7/8" if I can, but these Jegs one seem to be the only logical solution. Their price is OK, if they work good. My car is street driven though, so ground clerance and fitment issues are important. Going through fenders is not all that cool, but....
so, these headman hustler 1 7/8" go through fenders or not? Thanks guys.

They're all in the engine bay, trying to remember if you have to go around the steering shaft though, which really is'nt an issue but would be nice to know.
He's got just as much ground clearence with the Hustlers pictured as I do with the super comps. Think i would price having them ceramic coated through Heddman before I bought them, sometimes it's cheaper than buying the headers and then shipping them off to Jet-Hot.

Cool, thanks for the info. I think the headmans are a good idea.... there is a place here locally that does ceramic coatings...not too bad a deal actually. I can get my truck and car headers done at the same time.
