Dual Exhaust Idea

I have been playing with some new dual exhaust ideas that wont break your wallet and still retain good clearance. Also hearing all those Dual exhaust LS1's in the “Most Snarliest Exhaust” thread made me set on dual exhaust. Dynomax offers replacement parts intermediate pipes and so on, but their Dual 3" over axle pipe ran on the passengers side requires really putting a dent in the pan hard bar (illustrated below). So I was thinking of using Dynomax part number 47638, which is a 2 ½" intermediate pipe with over axle attached, putting them side by side and using 2 ½" Dynomax bullets ground clearance would be great because it will use stock routing.

Part List
2 Dynomax Intermediate Pipes WLK-47638 151.98
1 Flowmaster 3" to 2-2 ½" Y-Collector 389-Y250300A 39.99 (to mate to 3" cat installed already)
2 Dynomax 2 ½" Bullets WLK-24215 63.90

Grand Total 255.87

That’s as cheap if not cheaper than most 3" exhaust systems available. What does everyone think of my idea?

Dynomax Dual 3" over axle

Would it really be true duals if you have a y-pipe in there? You should do it, get LOTS of pictures, and post up to let us see, then a better judgement could be made. Right now, just speculation.

Do you have anymore pics of the intermediate pipe, or a link where you got the pics?

The car I posted above has a 4" intermediate pipe and hooker long tubes with a custom fabed 3" y pipe. Here are the pictures of whole exhaust system from the car above.

Dont worry these pictures arent attched they are hosted.

looks like a good set up you have there...But i dont think people with lowered cars would be able to run that set up....Keep up the good work...Also,its a true dual exhaust after the y pipe correct?

The picture above is not mine. Mine should have better clearance because its 2-2 ½“ and not single 4” like pictures above. I order the rest of the stuff Friday I should have everything complete in 2 weeks or so. Eventually I will have a dual cat y-pipe made to make it true dual. I will keep everyone posted on the progress.

zNucleaRz.......
what mufflers are being run on that blue Z28 that you posted and how does it sound????
I am running true duals from the headers back thru the factory dual cats (which were seperated at the factory Y pipe) and dual 3" pipes to the rear from there. Open exhaust right now. I am looking for a muffler like that to mount up so I have something to make her not sound like a truck.....

Anyone else running a compact muffler like this that sounds good?? I don't mind running 2 like in his pics, but really need to get something done.....

I’m not sure why he did that you have to ask him. I would think though dual 3" all the way would have gave him better clearance. But I think he might have done it to use it like a balance tube just a really long one.

I would say that the point is that he is attempting to run true duals. Your correct in saying that its won't be true duals when it y's from two to one and then back to two. However he said that he's gonna see how it works, and he's gonna get a dual converter y-pipe and have it modified so it WILL be true duals.

Anyways, goodluck man. When you get it all done it should be a neat setup that wont cost too much to reproduce. I think its a cool design and by the sounds of it, should work well.

The latest Popular Hot Rodding magazine has an interesting article on exhaust. It states that the hotest set-up is to do just that - duals into a single "chamber", back out again to duals.

Actually, it was the "chamber" that mattered. Said the power was the same with or without the mufflers after the chamber.

I did originally but, with having such a short outlet tip, the bass tone got to be downright unbearable to me while low rpm coasting down or accel...

Walker/Dynomax makes a true dual 2 1/4" system for headers through summit for around $134. If you are running a fairly stock 5.0 or 5.7 that should be plenty. All you have to do is add mufflers.

What mufflers are those? I have soooo much resonance from the exhaust right now, nothing could make it any worst. It is just loud all the time. I just need to find something to clean up the sound a little. Volume controle deosnt interest me THAT much.....

FWIW, I fit TWO 3" pipes through without modifying the panhard brace. They just fit REALLY SNUG and snug enough that, it doesn't rattle.

With my 2 1/2" I did not have to modify it either I have about 1/2 clearance around everything. I also did not have to remove the heat shield.

thats a great idea by the sound of it!

similar to what i want to do.... i want to run two 2.5" pipes in stock location like Willie's car... then into bullets or similar spintech muffler... depends on how my motor plans go this year and how well the flowmaster setup sounds after the high flow cat goes on.

Sort of I guess. Its only till I can afford to have a dual cat y-pipe made then I can use a real x-pipe

For the two Intermediate pipes and the left (driver side tail) it was 185.00 plus previous to total of 141.95 made the total 326.95 so it cost about as much as a Flowmaster cat back. Now as far as installation cost it was almost as much as the parts, because the shop I took it to has never attempted something like this but they did a awesome job but it took 5hrs! so Installation cost was 260.00 making grand total of 586.95. I have a sound clip but its 30mb and I don’t have anywhere to host it.

Dynomax part number 47638, $74.28 each from Advance Autoparts that’s $10 less than Summit and no shipping cost. Also if you seen these pictures of the Dynomax 3" intermediate pipe it has like a flat side to the bend these pipes have that also but the shop removed it when they were fitting the pipes.
