How to limit exhaust Reversion - Back Flow

Hello,

I've got Edelbrock tes headers and true duals without x or h pipe.

The other day I decided to put my hand over the exhaust pipe. I covered it COMPLETELY.... and the car ran fine... but i noticed something....

THE EXHAUST WAS SUCKING MY HAND IN ... Big time....

The flow going Back into the exhaust was soo bad I cut my hand on the exhaust pipe... because it sucked it in!!!

Now.... is there a way to stop this... i'm sure this is what dilutes the intake charge correct???

A x pipe will just allow the same thing to happen........

I just wanted to know if anyone has any information on this subject. I have read something about A.R headers....

Thank you,

ROb..

Did you put your hand over one exit pipe or both?

If you are only using your hand to cover one of the exits you are creating a pressure differential between the two banks. What you are feeling is the vacuum that is starting form on the bank that you are plugging. It is just like your intake manifold in that respect where you are drawing air out of a controlled plenum.

Actually I have turn downs on the car... if i look close... I can see it sucking up dust from the ground..... of coarse during the next pulse it will spit it out..but.............

I was actuallly thinking of hooking a smog pump directly to the headers..... soo that instead of sucking bad exhaust back into the combustion chamber.... it would be sucking fresh oxegen...

Your exhaust is not sucking in anything back into the combustion chamber. The only residual gasses that enter the combustion cycle are from the EGR function. The slower the engine speed the more distance there is between exhaust pulses. I bet if someone were to rev the car you would have nothing but dust being blown up in the air

wheeeww.. hang on I got something in my eyes....So it's just a low pressure cell behind a high pressure....... just was a little worried that there wasn't any scavaging...

Reversion would be caused mostly by valvetrain component selection. Exhaust affects it too, but the cam characteristics create it. If you really do believe that you have a serious reversion effect, contact a marine performance shop. It may sound strange to contact them, but if a boat has a reversion problem, its catastrophic. They should know if reversion is a problem with that cam.

Rob...

if you don't mind just out of curiosity would you have a way to hook a pressure gauge up to your exhuast?
