How hot does headers become?

In what temp range is headers usually at idle? and at cruise/wot?

I'm planning on getting a "laser Thermometer" off ebay and want to make sure It can handle the temepratures from me headers.

In the pits they'll be around 525-575*, after a pass or leaning on it a bit I get a ERR on my thermo gun that maxes at 700*

The other truck I run we had Jet-Hot do our headers, now when coming back from a pass it ranges from 250-300* depeneind on which tube you should and where at on the tube you shoot it. Within 2 minutes of shutting the engine off you cna literally grab the header with your bare hands and it's just really warm to the touch.

Improper application I'd say. I painted old set before I installed them and they held up for 2 years before I sold them, no flakey paint. VHT ceramic paint, torpedo heater used to pre heat headers, then paint was applied in 3 generious coats and sat in front of torpedo heater again......but I know what your getting at

If they are getting to 550-650 you better fix what's causing it before something really goes haywire.

Really? My 500 degree gun typically tops out with no reading with my ceramic coated SLP Tri-Ys when idling in the driveway in closed loop. What is the usual reason for being too hot? Too much timing or not enough?

not enough I would guess..

When we put the engine together we put the dist. in at O deg, then when we put the engine in the car we forgot to advance it, took the car for a drive and the headers were glowing ...........

Just placed a bid on a 1000Deg F. IR thermometer.......
