Hooker or Banks?
Hi everyone,I'm new to thirdgen.I'm getting ready to buy a catback,and I've been reading the hell out of the message boards and have come to either the banks or the hooker.The hooker sounds deep and throaty,but the banks sounds like the loudmouth kinda and thats what i like.Which one is better?Any good sound clips out there?Can I get the 200.00 hooker for my 89 formula 305 tbi?

The only difference on the $200 one is the flange where it bolts to the cat. It's an oval design. For mine and my fiance's, I cut the flange off, re rounded the pipe, and then welded an extension pipe to the I-pipe as a cat bypass. I thought it was worth the five minutes of work to save the $100+ per system
My car is an 87 TPI, hers is a 92 TBI.

I dont know how to weld,all I will have is basic hand tools.It seems it would be cheaper for someone like me to get the tbi specific kit for now.

Very true.I dont wna rig it up with clamps though,I want a leak proof exhaust.But back to the exhaust,how does it perform on your cars?Particularly the tbi.

No complaints here. Noticed a difference on her car, not so much on mine. She had stock exhaust, I was going from dual 2.5" to this, so I really didn't notice any difference other than some ground clearance and the sound of the exhaust.

dont get to excited about the banks. I talked to banks today and they said they discontinued them in january. The other source for them that most people got them from was Entech. They dont have a website any more and there phone numbers just go to a full mailbox. I fear they are out of business. I had a banks system on a car that I just sold and now I want another. Best 300 I have ever spent. If you find a place that still has them please let me know. If you find one used jump on it.

Since I had 2 banks systems on my camaros, I can honestly say there is no better sounding exhaust on a 305 5 speed than the banks. Of course it sounds good on an auto too.

if you search there are banks clips in this forum. I have read that the banks tips can rust no first hand. that is why I went magnaflow 304 stainless and only $350. seach for the banks you will find some threads on them.
I can honesly say there is no perfect kit for the thirdgen. there is a drawback to ever kit I have tried.
flowmaster 80 sereis=drone, alumized
flowmaster 50 sereis= alumized, single tip (I like dual tips)
borla= fit, dual tips (best sounding to date)
hooker= tips, alumized
magnaflow=quiet
banks= for me sound and read about rusting tips. I did not complete dig the sound. some do though (no first hand experienc on this one just heard clips of it and read this forum)
I am hoping the spintech stainless muffer I orderd fixes my dislike for my current setup. If not I am going to sell it and order a loudmouth and put and xr-1 borla in the I-pipe. I love the borla sound but there thirdgen kit cost way to much and fits crappy.
The hooker is good sounding and if you don't mind alumized and replaced the tips it would proably be decent. I just really don't like dual tips on these years of cars.

Whats the sound comparison on the hooker and the banks compared to,lets say a flowmaster 40 series,and a loudmouth?

Hooker=mellow, quieter
flowmaster 40=raspy, loud. That signature flowmaster sound
loudmouth=no finesse. Basically a LOUD and aggressive exhaust designed for that purpose. Very freeflowing glasspack type muffler.
Banks=Never heard it, so I couldn't tell you. I have read that it's got a pretty mellow sound to it as well.

Banks
This post got me interested in hearing a banks but after endless searches I could find nothing on sound clips. I even went to the new sticky on sound clips and went over 2 pages of sound clips but nothing there claimed to be a banks, and alot of them did not even list there exhaust setup so that didn't help either,,,,I give up. For such a popular exhaust system I would think someone would have a sound clip of it or atleast some photos. I was interested in how they have the exhaust tips exit. Something funny about Banks though, I found out they still make a complete system with header and all for my wifes Jeep CJ 6 cylinder but they don't make it for the third gen anymore? I would think they still make it for the 4th gen which could easily be adapted to the 3rd gen. Or did they stop making Banks for the 4th gen too? Larry.

hooker is NOT mellower or quieter..... lol
trust me on that one - here's my car with the hooker exhuast on it!
http://www.ss-perf.com/videos/dyno42005.wmv
fact is, the sound of the exhuast has a lot to do with your mods...
i like my hooker system, sounded good even on a mostly stock car... pretty much anything that sounds good IMO is gonna be quiet on a stock car...
other than that, the aluminised steel does last ok, not gonna be like a stainless system, but you get the idea... you pay for what ya get
and whatever you do, dont get the loudmouth, it was designed to be loud and IMO is comparable to being a ***** andputting a fart can on your car... its sole purpose is to be irritating...

Thanks Gearhead, I would love to hear what a banks sounds like. If I like it the next problem would be trying to find one now Oh well, still interested though, Thanks again, Larry.

firebirdjones there is a sound clip of the Banks system somewhere on here, but it doesn't sound anything like mine. Most of the guys who are running it have the fourth-gen muffler.
